Though many more Sohmas, friends, and classmates are introduced and play a part throughout the series, these are the ones who have the most impact and continue to show up throughout the story's events. Listed are the characters' ages from their first appearance in the anime.

15 Tohru Honda

The main protagonist of the series is Tohru Honda, a teenage high school girl with an unbelievable work ethic and unfathomable kindness in her heart. She lost her mom before the start of the anime and ends up living in a tent to avoid burdening her family or friends. Her uncommon childhood and her wise mother led her to become the compassionate, kind, powerful young woman she is at the start of the anime.

Tohru is the most important person to ever enter the lives of the Sohma family, creating unique and powerful relationships with each of them over her time living with Shigure, Kyo, and Yuki. She is incredibly strong and impactful, even at such a young age!

14 Yuki Sohma

The first of the Sohma family that Tohru met from being in the same high school, Yuki plays a crucial role in how the events of the anime play out. He was born the year of the Rat, making him kind, gentle, mature, and charming, even though he bears incredible guilt, rage, and sadness underneath his princely exterior.

Yuki, along with most of his family, dealt with emotional abuse throughout his childhood and masks the pain through his friendly and inviting demeanor. He is the perfect match to the generous and kind Tohru, on a deep and emotional level.

13 Kyo Sohma

The total opposite of his cousin and roommate Yuki, Kyo is loud and brash and loves to start fights. He takes on the role of the Cat in the Zodiac, making him extra feisty and standoffish. He lost faith in his family and doesn't feel like he is a true part of the Zodiac, being taunted and degraded by his family members in his past.

It takes some time for him to grow close to others, but when he does, he becomes incredibly loyal and protective. Kyo fights a lot of demons, but he is constantly trying to better himself to make Tohru and his family happy.

12 Shigure Sohma

Shigure is the comical, pervy older cousin who lives with the main protagonist trio. He takes on the role of the caretaker in the home, earning money as a novelist. Shigure loves being childish and wacky, and he never turns down an opportunity to tease or annoy his younger cousins. He, Ayame, and Hatori are three peas in a pod, all relying on one another to keep their highly dysfunctional family running smoothly.

11 Arisa Uotani

One of Tohru's best friends, Arisa, or Uo, is a rough and tough girl with a past filled with crime and mischief. She is very protective and caring towards Tohru and Hana, wanting only the best for her two closest friends.

10 Saki Hanajima

Saki, also known as Hana, is the third young woman in the best friend trio with Tohru and Uo. She is dark, mysterious, and spooky to her classmates, yet she doesn't frighten her two friends one bit. 9 Hatori Sohma

Hatori is one of the Sohmas who spends a lot of time around Tohru and her roommates during her time with them. He is close with Shigure and Ayame, as they are all around the same age and spent the same experiences growing up. Hatori is calm, collected, intelligent, and very caretaking, as he serves as the family's doctor. He is the Dragon in the Zodiac, but he transforms into a seahorse instead of a dragon when the curse is activated.

8 Ayame Sohma

This wild and spunky fashionista is cursed by the Snake of the Zodiac. He is just as silly, crazy, and pervy as his best friend Shigure, but is way more obedient and submissive when he's with the mature Hatori. Ayame is incredibly flamboyant and has beautiful, long, white hair. He wants desperately to be closer with his little brother Yuki, but his highly different personality and poor judgment constantly put them in awkward situations.

7 Momiji Sohma

• Height: 155.8 cm / 5'1"

The young and kind Momiji is arguably the strongest and most lovable Sohma in the series. He is adorable, spunky, funloving, and compassionate with his family and friends, and he gets along with people very easily.

Momiji is the Rabbit in the Zodiac and is half-german, so he is always exclaiming words and phrases in his native European language. He is super sweet and innocently flirty with Tohru, and he can get away with it with how cute, young, and feminine he looks!

6 Hatsuharu Sohma

• Height: 170.2 cm / 5'7"

The Ox in the Zodiac is Hatsuharu, or just Haru. He has a dual personality, which is referenced to as his Black and White moods. He can be very calm, inquisitive, serious, and relaxed, or can be triggered and turn loud, brash, and tough. Haru used to resent Yuki for being the Rat who rode on the Ox's back in the Zodiac legend, but now admires and loves him. He is noble, strong, and loyal, just like an ox.

5 Akito Sohma

• Height: 164 cm / 5'5"

The main antagonist of the series due to their unhealthy and abusive control over the Sohma family, Akito is the "god" that all the Zodiac members must follow every command of. Akito is very intimidating and isn't afraid to get very physical with their family members, having hurt many of them in the past. Akito has some deep-rooted troubles that need working out, leading them to feel very disturbed and angry towards Tohru.

4 Kisa Sohma

Kisa is a young girl finding her way in the scary world of primary school and curses. She was born with the curse of the Tiger, resulting in her hair and eyes being naturally bright gold. She was bullied at school for how she looked, so she stopped speaking entirely to any of her family, causing a huge rift in her personal relationships.

Tohru and Kisa bond through compassion and understanding and Kisa grows as a kind young lady after they meet. She sees Tohru as a sister and the two stay adorably close as friends throughout their time together in the series.

3 Kyoko Honda

The endearing, wonderful, hardworking mother of Tohru is a character that makes an insane impact on many of the story's characters, even though she died before the start of the series' events. She helped mold Tohru into being the loving, caring young woman she is throughout the story.

Kyoko also had a huge impact on Tohru's friends and even a young Sohma. She was a rough and tough gang member as a teenager who turned her life around after she met Tohru's father and became a very wise and influential mother. She was only thirty-three years of age when she died.

2 Kagura Sohma

• Height: 160.5 cm / 5'2.5"

The Boar of the Zodiac is a charming young woman attending a girls-only junior college and loves her fellow Sohmas. She has quite the interesting and hilarious personality, as she can quickly switch from an incredibly kind, soft, and sweet personality to a very wild, loud, and violent one.

Kagura claims she and Kyo will fall in love and get married because he once proposed as a child, and she believes they're a good match because of their shared curse. Kagura matures and grows throughout the series, calming down her violent outbursts as she progresses through her young womanhood.

1 Machi Kuragi

Introduced a bit further down the line in the series, Machi is a normal girl appointed to a student council role alongside Yuki. She is quiet and reserved, not willing to make friends with the people around her. She sees Yuki as someone like herself, filled with trauma from a troubled childhood and hoping to move past her flaws.

The two connect over their time together at school and eventually fall for each other. They push each other to become better versions of themselves, being very positive forces in each other's lives.
