Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy was a pleasant surprise for many and highly successful at the box office. Rumors of a sequel have been churning since the film’s release as fans look forward to seeing the non-player character Guy return for more unexpected fun. President of 20th Century Studios Steve Asbell has confirmed a sequel and promised fans that “it’s a fantastic story.”

Free Guy premiered in August 2021 and introduced fans to Reynolds' Guy, who lived an uneventful life in the fictional Free City. Working as a bank teller, along with his best friend Buddy, Guy woke up every morning, went to work, lived through a bank robbery, and never doubted his existence. However, one day, he finds out that it is all a program, and that’s when things get interesting. It seems like Free Guy wasn’t the end of Guy’s journey.

“We have more Free Guy movies coming,” said Asbell in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He revealed that they are “awaiting a script that is days away.” Already working on the mammoth task of bringing the Avatar sequel to the big screen, Asbell confirmed that Free Guy 2 will not be ignored. The sequel is also on the list of top films that the studio will be focusing on for a theatrical release. “We’re going to be pretty busy,” he said.

Free Guy was originally a 20th Century Fox production, but after Disney's acquisition of the studio, the film had the liberty to use several Disney Easter eggs. Many of them were in fact plugged in by Reynolds himself, including references to the Avengers and Star Wars. He was also the one to add the extremely popular Mariah Carey song “Fantasy.” When the trailer of the film was released, Carey was also amused by the song selection and showed her support for Free Guy by participating in a hilarious TikTok duet with Reynolds.

While Free Guy received a lot of praise from both fans and critics, the cherry on top of all its success was securing a nomination for an Academy Award in the category of Best Visual Effects. The movie based in the fictional Free City uses some fantastic effects, especially when the world is seen through Guy’s glasses. While the film is up against tough competition, fans are hopeful for the movie to take home the trophy. Other films nominated in the category include Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, No Time to Die, and Dune.

Free Guy is streaming on Disney Plus.
