With Fortnite being a free-to-play game, the title makes its money through cosmetics. Whether it be players purchasing the Battle Pass or directly from the item shop, the bulk of Fortnite's skins and accessories are kept behind a paywall. However, occasionally a cosmetic or quest pack is given out for free, albeit with some type of caveat. This is the case with the Sulfuric Street Shine Pickaxe, which has certain requirements to actually unlock.

Epic Games' ever-popular battle royale title is in the final weeks of its Chapter 3 Season 2. A tumultuous season that began with Fortnite temporarily eradicating its signature building mechanic, players have since been steadily reclaiming the island's named locations from the sinister IO. Fortnite's most recent update brings back a pair of Sideways weapons to the game, along with a host of performance improvements.

How to Unlock Sulfuric Street Shine Pickaxe

In order for Fortnite players to unlock the Sulfuric Street Shine Pickaxe, they must first get the Volcanic Assassin Pack. As mentioned previously, the pack is free, but with a catch. Players must first log in to their Fortnite accounts on PC, and claim the Volcanic Assassin Pack via the Epic Games Store. The deal is limited exclusively to PC, meaning console-only players are essentially out of luck. Once claimed, a series of quests must be completed in order to unlock the pack's various cosmetics. To unlock the Sulfuric Street Shine Pickaxe, players must deal 2,100 damage to opponents.

After players have dealt the hefty sum of opponent damage, they can move on to unlocking the rest of the Volcanic Assassin Pack's cosmetics. Lighting 100 structures-worth on fire unlocks the Fiery Jam Back Bling, and surviving a whopping 50 storm phases grants the Fiery Flow Wrap. Those who complete all three quests will then unlock the Tectonic Komplex Outfit. The free pack is being given out as part of the Epic Games Store's Epic Mega Sale, which is offering gamers huge discounts on a variety of different titles.

Although Fortnite's Volcanic Assassin Pack being exclusive to PC may seem new, Epic has released a handful of platform-exclusive cosmetics in the past. In 2020, PlayStation Plus subscribers were given an exclusive cosmetic set. Aptly titled the PlayStation Plus Celebration Pack, the cosmetic set included an Outfit and Back Bling backpack in the subscription service's blue-and-white color scheme. While console players who own a PC can technically get the Volcanic Assassin Pack thanks to Fortnite's cross-platform functionality, other cosmetics remain locked behind platform-specific subscriptions.

Even though PC players are getting a freebie, there are still plenty of other new cosmetics players can get via the in-game item shop. Marvel's Scarlet Witch has recently been added, modeled after her appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. An even more recent addition is the iconic character RoboCop, appearing as he does in the 1987 classic.

Fortnite is free-to-play on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
