Fortnite has introduced a new game mode known as Fortnite Festival, which is very reminiscent of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1 introduced three new game modes, including a LEGO-based survival game mode, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival. Fortnite Festival features gameplay similar to Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

The Guitar Hero series is a music/rhythmn game franchise that was incredibly popular in the mid-2000s. After a deluge of releases, the series eventually fell to the wayside. Its developer, Harmonix, branched off to create the Rock Band series of games, which had similar music-based rhythm gameplay as Guitar Hero. While the developer would eventually be acquired by Epic Games in 2021, Harmonix would continue supporting the Rock Band series with DLC. Its likely no surprise that Harmonix was responsible for developing Fortnite's new Fortnite Festival mode.

Fortnite Festival mimics Guitar Hero's gameplay, having five keys that players need to play as notes fly down a "highway." Players can choose between a Guitar, Bass, Keytar, or microphone, which is also reminiscent of Rock Band's control options. Fortnite Festival also contains several licensed songs that players can choose to rock out to that span many different genres and periods. These include "Gangnam Style" by PSY, "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd, and more. Players can either aim for a top score on Main Stage or create their own mixes on Jam Stage too.

With this game mode replicating the Rock Band series, some gamers may want to try breaking out the old Guitar Hero or Rock Band controller peripherals to play. As of this writing however, Fortnite Festival doesn't support instrument controllers.. However, developers are working on their implementation. More information about plastic instruments being usable in Fortnite Festival will be shared in 2024.
