For almost five years now, Fortnite has collaborated with some of the biggest franchises on the planet. Beginning with Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, Fortnite has continued to crossover with popular movie, TV, and gaming franchises, ranging from Star Wars to Rick and Morty to Resident Evil. While there seems to be no limit on what franchises Fortnite can claim, there's usually a general pattern that the game's crossovers adhere to, whereby collaborations only usually happen when that IP is coming into the spotlight, such as a new movie or game release. But sometimes crossovers can happen on a whim, and Fortnite's latest map changes are the perfect excuse to bring in one more popular gaming franchise.
Just a few weeks ago, Fortnite received its Chapter 4 Season 2 update. Titled "Mega," this update added all the stuff fans have come to expect from the long-running live-service game, from a new Battle Pass to new weapons, vehicles, and some quests. But by far the biggest change in Fortnite's latest Season is the addition of some new locations on the island, all themed around a bold cyberpunk aesthetic, paving the way for an obvious crossover with one CD Projekt Red game.
A Cyberpunk 2077 x Fortnite Crossover Is a No-Brainer
The latest Fortnite Season wears its influences on its sleeve. The bottom right corner of Fortnite's map has been completely remade, with a Feudal Japan aesthetic taking over most of the area. Players can find a series of ancient Japanese castles and houses dotted around the island now, with dueling dojos, cherry blossoms, and hot springs littered in between. But the main focal point of this newly designed area is Fortnite's Mega City, a neon-soaked, high-tech city clearly inspired by the cyberpunk genre.
Gigantic billboards adorn the sides of tall skyscrapers, glowing neon rails run throughout the city, and a gang of masked thugs patrols at street level. Mega City's cyberpunk influences are immediately clear, and these inspirations run through the entire Season. Many of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2's Battle Pass skins are cyberpunk-inspired, with characters like Thunder, an anthropomorphic lizard wearing a leather jacket with an oversized popped collar, being obvious references to other popular cyberpunk properties. Fortnite's new vehicles, a futuristic car with strip lighting and the ability to drift and a boost-enabled motorbike also feel suitably cyberpunk.
With the cyberpunk aesthetic dominating Fortnite's latest Season, an official Cyberpunk 2077 crossover seems like an absolute no-brainer. With character skins like Thunder already wearing outfits that would blend in seamlessly with Cyberpunk 2077's world, an actual crossover with the franchise would be a natural fit, with its characters now fitting into the Fortnite aesthetic even more so than recent additions like Resident Evil Leon Kennedy crossover skin. But if Fortnite is going to crossover with Cyberpunk 2077, then it should go all-in.
At the bare minimum, Fortnite should add a selection of Cyberpunk 2077 skins. The most obvious crossover skin to choose would be Keanu Reeves' Johnny Silverhand, one of the game's most iconic characters. With John Wick already being in Fortnite, it's likely that Epic Games would be able to get the actor's likeness once more.
Alternatively, the generic cover art version of Cyberpunk 2077's main character V would also be a good pull, with the iconic LED-lined jacket and t-shirt combo being the preferred outfit. But Fortnite should go above and beyond with a hypothetical Cyberpunk 2077 crossover, and add new in-game mechanics, just like the Dragon Ball and Star Wars crossovers did. For example, players could be able to find Johnny Silverhand's Malorian Arms pistol, one of the most effective weapons in Cyberpunk 2077.
