Highlights
- Advanced building techniques like 90s allow players to quickly gain high ground, giving them an advantage in fights and better protection from incoming fire. Mastering these techniques is crucial for winning Fortnite games.
- Tunneling is a useful technique for moving through the map safely and avoiding enemy encounters. By building tunnels, players can evade the storm and stay hidden from opponents.
- Coning is the only building technique that can block opponents from building further. By placing a cone, players can prevent their enemies from gaining high ground and limit their options in a building duel.
Fortnite has unique building mechanisms that allow players to build structures such as walls, floors, and ramps in real time. These structures help protect players during one-on-one fights by blocking incoming fire. The possibilities to build stairs, buildings, and cover are endless, ensuring players survive the battle royale.
Fortnite: 10 Rarest Skin in 2024
Fortnite celebrates its 7th anniversary in 2024, but within that time, there are still some skins that haven't returned in over half that time.
While players can get away with basic building techniques in Fortnite, pro gamers know and understand the importance of advanced building mechanisms. These allow players to gain high ground quickly and block their opponents from building while providing sufficient cover. Mastering advanced Fortnite building techniques is essential to surviving the last stages of the game when opponents are exposed and vulnerable to attack. Note that understanding these building techniques may take time, but learning them is worthwhile to win a Fortnite game in 2024.
1 90s
Gain Height Quickly
90-degree builds are a classic Fortnite building technique that allows players to gain high ground quickly. When building 90s, start by placing a wall in front and another on the side. Next, jump and place a ramp, then take a 90-degree turn and repeat the process until the desired height is achieved. Some players add a floor and a ramp to increase the stability and durability of the build, ensuring opponents can shoot it down easily.
Building 90s can be complex and may require a little practice in creative modes designed specifically for building. The goal is to be quick and master the buttons for each build to gain height as quickly as possible.
2 Tunneling
A Protective Passage
Tunneling allows players to move through the map without getting shot and killed. Players can build tunnels diagonally or horizontally to escape enemy encounters while evading the storm. When tunneling horizontally, build three walls, then place two walls on either side to create a tunnel. Players can also mount a roof if the opponent fires from above using a Lock on Pistol. Repeat the process until the enemy is out of sight.

Want the Alien Ellen Ripley and Xenomorph skins? Here’s how to get them in Fortnite.
When tunneling diagonally, build a ramp and a wall on the side and continue the process until the opponent is out of sight. While tunnels create a protective passage, they can be destroyed by opponent fire, making it crucial to pass quickly.
3 Coning
Block Opponents and Gain Height
Coning is the only Fortnite building technique that can block opponents and prevent them from building further. If a player is in a building duel with an enemy and both ramp up to the same height, one can build a cone to block the other’s pathway and stop their building. To cone a player, simply press the associated cone button on the controller to trigger the build. Players can change the associated keybind in the controller settings.
Players can also use cones to gain high ground using a technique called cone jumps. To perform a cone jump, place a cone and then stand at the top before jumping and building a floor. Repeat the process until the desired height is achieved.
4 Ramping
Gain High Ground
Ramping is one of the oldest and simplest building techniques in Fortnite. It allows players to gain high ground quickly and overcome elevation challenges when traversing the map. For example, if a player tries to climb a mountain but can’t due to the elevation, they can build a ramp to get to the top. This saves time by eliminating the need to go around the mountain to get to the cliff.
Fortnite: Hot Spots Explained
Hot Spots are back in Fortnite, and here's everything players need to know about them.
To ramp, simply press the associated ramp button on your controller, walk onto it, and place another on the edge of the first. Repeat the process to create a diagonal floor that goes higher and higher with each ramp added. Ramping is crucial in heated battles where players must gain high ground to aim and defeat their opponents easily.
5 Editing
Customizes Builds to Suit Various Situations
Editing is an essential Fortnite building technique that allows players to remove individual parts from floors, walls, and ramps. This process creates openings, such as small windows and doors in structures. Players can use a window to aim and fire at opponents or a door to escape a build. Learning how to edit builds ensures players can maintain cover while creating narrow passages and pathways. It's also an essential tip and trick to securing victory royale. Some building techniques like tunneling go hand in hand with editing, allowing players to create pathways for a quick escape when needed.
To edit a build, press the associated edit button on your controller and select how you want to edit, e.g., remove the middle tile to create a window. Players can also create half walls by deselecting the top horizontal tile row. Note that players can only edit the builds they create and not those of other opponents.
