As 2023 comes to a close, Fortnite came out with a set of updates that made it the most impactful year in the game's history. While Fortnite has had enduring popularity for years, it just unlocked the opportunity to spread even further than before. The developers have shown a willingness to try something new with the game, and there's a real chance that the new direction could end up as a striking success. Of course, it's far too early to make any broad assumptions yet, but Fortnite has put itself in a potentially high-reward position.

While it was originally intended for Fortnite's Save the World mode to be the game's main attraction, the Battle Royale almost immediately eclipsed it in popularity several times over. In the ensuing years, Fortnite's battle Royale has emerged as one of the biggest online multiplayer games in the world. It has also benefited from a large amount of crossovers with media franchises of all kinds. While Save the World continues to exist, it's nowhere near the phenomenon that Batle Royale is, and is seen as a side game. Almost any time someone talks about Fortnite, one can safely assume that they're referring to the Battle Royale mode, as it receives a startling amount of updates.

LEGO Fortnite brings a new island with a heavy survival focus, but it also carries an unexpected connection to the Soulslike genre.

Fortnite Has Become More Than a Battle Royale Game

The Lego Fortnite world

Just a few days ago, Fortnite added new permanent game modes that vastly expanded what the game has to offer. These new games are:

  • LEGO Fortnite: A crafting and survival game with a LEGO art style.
  • Rocket Racing: A high-speed racing game that crosses over with Rocket League.
  • Fortnite Festival: A rhythm game featuring many popular songs that's reminiscent of Guitar Hero.

Within a matter of days, Fortnite grew to encompass several new genres. While the game has had events with temporary game modes before, these new developments are far more substantial, and look set to have a major impact on the game's future.

The amount of intricate details surrounding the new modes, from the sheer size of LEGO Fortnite's map to the amount of licensed tracks in Fortnite Festival show the amount of dedication put into them. With the three new game modes adding three new genres to Fortnite, the game's ability to generate interest from new players has expanded as well. For example, while there were creative maps focused on racing in the past, Rocket Racing brings a fully realized experience for fans of racing games to enjoy. This could be the biggest opportunity that Fortnite has had to date to appeal to a wider audience of prospective players.

One special detail to note is that unlike Save the World mode, LEGO Fortnite , Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival are all free to play by default.

A set of new game modes to play also holds the potential to make Fortnite's crossovers even better. Thus far, crossovers have mostly been good for new skins, gliders, and occasional limited-time items. However, Fortnite's new game modes open the door for options such as:

  • Theme songs for shows like Dragon Ball Z and Jujutsu Kaisen in Fortnite Festival.
  • Decals based on the crossover series in question for Rocket Racing.
  • Crossover characters being added as adventurers in LEGO Fortnite.

Fortnite has so many high-profile crossovers that it's only a matter of time before the next one. Once the time comes, Fortnite's expanded selection could increase the value of those crossovers.

At the start of the season, it was unlikely that Fortnite's first Chapter 5 Battle Pass would be one of the less notable pieces of news surrounding the game. The unveiling of Fortnite's new game modes has managed to eclipse it, though. At this point, the game is evolving into something much larger than a Battle Royale experience with a lot of playable characters. Fortnite is bigger than ever before, and 2023 will likely go down as a major turning point in the game's history.
