The long-awaited Five Nights at Freddy's movie is coming out soon, and fans want to know if there will be an R-rated version of the film. Director Emma Tammi responded to those fans, but her response was not encouraging.

A Five Nights at Freddy's movie produced by Blumhouse was announced in 2015, only a year after the first game was released. The film had several changes in director, including Chris Columbus leaving the project, which caused the project to stay in development for so long. The iconic horror game franchise created by Scott Cawthon was never given higher than a T for Teen rating by the ESRB or 13+ on the app store, but with the film spending so long in development, most fans of the games have grown up and would like to see the film be R-rated.

A Five Nights at Freddy's movie animatronic nearly caused a problem on set that is eerily close to the video games, but did all turn out well?

In an interview with Forbes, Tammi responded to the request for an R-rated version of Five Nights at Freddy's. "We knew that some of the fan base would want an R-rated version of this film," she said. "On the one level, we wanted to be inclusive of the younger audiences and knew we were going to hit the PG 13 rating, but for the audience that also wanted that level of violence, if you will, or at least insinuation of violence, we really wanted to still include elements that felt dark."

Tammi continued to talk about how they were able to keep the PG-13 rating while exploring the darker elements in the Five Nights at Freddy's lore. "Of course, there are a lot of dark elements to see in the lore, but in terms of some of the kills and everything, it was just all execution dependent. We really wanted to ensure that we were showing the right amount and doing creative things to insinuate what was happening or show what was happening without fully seeing it to still fit in that PG-13 category.” The director added, "I would say not to expect an R-rated version on this one. We're really happy with how the PG-13 tone landed; it felt like the right fit for this particular film. We're sticking by it."

Although Five Nights at Freddy's fans may be disappointed that the first film in the franchise won’t get a gory R-rated version, the director seems to leave the door open for any possible sequels to be R-rated. Additionally, the more gruesome scenes will seemingly still be included in the film, even if they are more or less hidden from the audience. If fans want to watch an R-rated Five Nights at Freddy's movie, they can try Nicolas Cage's Willy's Wonderland, which is seemingly inspired by the horror franchise.

Five Nights at Freddy's releases on Peacock on October 26 at 8:00 PM ET and in theaters on October 27, 2023.
