Fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s finally have the opportunity to witness the pizzeria and the animatronics in all their live-action glory. No matter how one feels about the original game and its many sequels, it seems fair to say that FNaF has forever changed the indie horror genre.

Whether it’s the fate of certain characters, or how people even got to the pizzeria in the first place, Five Nights at Freddy’s has a few plot holes and inconsistencies that make players question things more than they should. After all, this is a movie about haunted animatronics, but that doesn’t mean it's void of logic and reason.

This article contains spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy's.

8 What Is Balloon Boy?

Balloon Boy figurine
  • The secret animatronic first featured in Five Nights at Freddy's2

Balloon Boy is often seen as one of the most hated animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s due to his creepy appearance and how he constantly jumpscares the players and steals their batteries. However, Balloon Boy appears in Five Nights at Freddy’s as a surprise animatronic, but is he even an animatronic? Balloon Boy must be sentient, as he is found moving around in different locations around the pizzeria, and even entering a taxi.

It just doesn’t make sense how Balloon Boy is so tiny, and practically a figurine, yet seems as sentient as the animatronics. Does that mean William Afton killed a child and placed it into a toy? The origins of Balloon Boy leave much mystery surrounding what he actually is.

7 How Did William Afton Lead A Double Life?

  • William Afton lives as the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place owner and the career counselor Steve Raglan

William Afton is known to the Five Nights at Freddy’s community as a notorious serial killer and a heinous one who only kills children and stuffs their bodies in animatronic suits. However, if this is William Afton’s hobby, how come he was able to lead a double life as a career counselor with the name Steve Raglan?

Five Nights At Freddy's: Every Game Ranked By Difficulty

The Five Nights At Freddy's series has varying levels of difficulty. Here's every FNAF game, ranked from easiest to hardest.

Would people not look into his past as an owner of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place or the fact that his name is completely different? It seems odd that William Afton would be in an industry where he had constant access to kill children, just to then move over to career counseling to help adults get jobs.

6 Is Vanessa Actually A Cop?

  • Vanessa doesn't do much policing

Vanessa is a police officer in Five Nights at Freddy’s, but in all honesty, she doesn’t seem very good at her job. As a cop, she should be out patrolling the town and keeping people out of trouble. However, she seems to spend most of her time hanging out at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place. How has Vanessa not been fired, she clearly isn’t protecting and serving if she’s hanging out with Freddy Fazbear and the gang every night.

Vanessa doesn’t just turn up to the pizzeria to make sure everything is okay in the abandoned location, she decides to stay and build forts out of chairs to have some fun. It doesn’t make much sense that Vanessa is a police officer, on duty, and someone who has plenty of time to hang around an abandoned pizzeria. Does she not have a radio to respond to, or is she just lying about her job?

5 Did No One Smell Rotting Corpses?

Freddy from Five Nights at Freddy's movie
  • Surely the animatronics would smell foul if there were dead bodies inside

The reason William Afton was able to get away with his child murders comes from the fact that he would stuff the children’s bodies into the animatronics, as nobody would even think to look inside these lovable things. However, that doesn’t make much sense when one realizes just how bad the smell of a rotting corpse would be, especially decomposing inside a metal suit that interacts with children on a daily basis.

Surely someone would have smelt something foul? Even so, security guards after the pizzeria closed down have either quit or disappeared, but their bodies are just stuffed in a backroom. How have none of the other guards before Mike stumbled across these bodies, and what do they even do with them? It’s not like they’re going to dig graves in a parking lot.

4 How Did A Giant Animatronic Get To Mike’s House?

FNAF Five Spirits Golden Freddy
  • Golden Freddy arrives at Mike's house, but how?

The animatronics want Abby Schmidt so that they can play with her forever when she is reborn as an animatronic like them. Yet, one important question remains, and something that doesn’t make much sense, is just how Golden Freddy managed to trek all the way to Mike’s house.

13 Scariest Five Nights At Freddy's Animatronics

The Five Nights at Freddy's series is famous for its terrifying collection of animatronics. These monstrosities are the scariest of the bunch.

It’s unlikely that Golden Freddy got a taxi, considering he had no money to pay with. It’s also unlikely that he walked, as he would have been spotted, or considering how slow the animatronics walk, it would have taken hours, well into the morning.

3 Why Did The Yellow Rabbit Costume Have Springlocks Inside?

william afton as the yellow rabbit
  • The Yellow Rabbit is the origin of Springtrap

Considering Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place had a mix of mascots in suits and animatronics, it seems a tad strange that the suits that are supposed to fit someone inside to fully move around in would have springlocks designed to basically crush people's flesh and bones to trap them inside.

When William Afton puts on the Yellow Rabbit costume, it seems a tad bizarre that this suit would be designed in such a way that it would trap him, and effectively kill him slowly, stuffing him and keeping him locked inside to rot, with no way out.

2 Is The Cupcake Sentient?

chica's cupcake
  • Chica's cupcake has sentience, unlike the game version

What seems most harmless in the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is the cupcake, which is just a silly little animatronic attached to Chica’s plate. With two big teeth, one wouldn’t expect the cupcake to be harmful, until it tries biting off someone’s face and Mike’s leg. This begs the question, is the Five Nights at Freddy’s cupcake sentient?

It doesn’t make much sense for the cupcake to have the soul of a child, as Mike’s dreams do not show the cupcake kid, nor does it make sense for William to stuff a cupcake with a child’s body. Why is the cupcake so evil when it’s usually just a decoration to be a part of the evil Chica?

1 Are The Animatronics Good Or Bad?

five nights at freddys animatronics
  • The animatronics do good things and bad things alike

Another thing that doesn’t translate well is the state of the animatronics. Whilst they are visually incredible for a live-action movie, the animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s seem to pick and choose when they want to murder someone, or when they want to play. Whether it’s having a tickle fight, singing on the stage, building forts out of furniture, or biting people in half, the animatronics seem to be pretty messy when it comes to morality.

What’s the deal with the animatronics, and why do they seem to fluctuate between helping someone and killing someone? It makes sense for them to kill William Afton, due to the fact that he killed them and trapped their souls in the animatronics, but it doesn’t seem to make much sense for them to want to kill random security guards, people that break-in, and another child.
