As promised, Netflix has released the first 15 minutes of Zack Snyder’s upcoming zombie apocalypse flick Army of the Dead. While the film was scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 14, and arrives on Netflix on May 21, an exclusive event on Thursday allowed fans to watch the beginning of the film, which reveals how the outbreak occurs.

It was previously confirmed that the film was rated R, mostly for violence and gore, and in just the first 15 minutes, viewers will be witnessing a lot of bloodshed and explosions. Snyder has promised in past interviews that this is not a typical zombie flick, and the exclusive footage of his zombie-filled world does invoke a lot of emotions, from annoyance to anger and finally sadness when, spoiler alert, the first one of the good guys dies.

It all began with a live event on YouTube, which lasted a half-hour, and included Snyder himself along with the film’s stars Dave Bautista, Matthias Schweighöfer, and Tig Notaro. They first introduced the film to the fans, followed by scenes of a search for an underground vault that contained the opening sequence of the movie. Viewers were asked to participate by dropping emojis in the comments section, in order to speed up the process.

After the livestream, fans were offered the first look at Army of the Dead, which reveals the comical reason behind the zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. Two soldiers casually make Area 51 jokes, because they’re transporting cargo, the contents of which are top secret. A sudden accident leaves the cargo exposed, and the soldiers are advised to make a run for it. However, they obviously aren’t quick enough and come face to face with a new and improved breed of zombies. Within seconds, all soldiers have been turned, with the zombie boss setting its sight on Sin City.

The remaining clip is the opening credits of the film that introduce viewers to a few residents of Las Vegas who are brave enough to fight the horde. While most of the city is overrun with the undead, the few remaining humans manage to create a wall that restricts the zombies to one area of the abandoned city. Complete with classic music, clips of the undead on a killing spree at the Las Vegas Strip, and a zombie Elvis, the footage promises a fun take of the zombie apocalypse

The synopsis and the first official trailer of the film have already revealed that Army of the Dead will focus on a group of people attempting to rob a casino vault in the zombie-infested city. Led by Bautista’s Scott Ward, the team will have 32 hours to enter Sin City, find the money, and leave. Along their way, they will be encountering other modified zombies, including an undead tiger. The cast includes Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Nora Arnezeder, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Army of the Dead releases in select theaters on May 14 and on Netflix for streaming on May 21.
