Nintendo and Intelligent Systems shared a set of preview videos for Fire Emblem Engage that focus on past Fire Emblem protagonists having support conversations with some of the newer characters introduced. While Nintendo has been producing English versions of trailers covering major topics, such as Fire Emblem Engage's upcoming DLC, the official Japanese Twitter account and website have been showing off more information. This includes a number of characters, new and old, that will be a part of the game's narrative.
The integration of past Fire Emblem protagonists in Engage is through its new gameplay mechanic, the Emblem Rings. These house the souls of past heroes, providing players with unique benefits depending on the protagonist and the game they hailed from. These characters are also able to converse with the newer cast in support conversations, as seen in other preview videos from the Twitter account. The official website was recently updated to show off six past protagonists being included in the game interacting with the newer cast.
These can be seen in six short videos on Fire Emblem Engage's website (translated by ljbtqiaplus on Twitter), showing fan-favorite characters like Ike, Lucina, and Roy, in the game. The first video has Alear talking with Ike, where she asks for his strength in protecting their world, which Ike readily accepts. Another conversation is seen between Etie and Lucina, where the latter is admiring the flowers since her ruined future had destroyed all vegetation. Roy's conversation with Diamant highlights their shared desire for peace.
The other three characters are Eirika, Micaiah, and Leif, who are the protagonists from older Fire Emblem games as well. Each of these previews also highlights an aspect of their characters from their home game, such as Celine discussing Eirika's more idealistic mindset when approaching war, or how Micaiah can see the good that Alear can do. Some fans noticed that Leif's character design harkens back to his appearance in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, with his hair being spikier and less smooth like in other spin-offs such as Fire Emblem Heroes.
Nintendo's official website also provides brief biographies of each character, along with a look at the ring that will be equipped to the player's characters. The Expansion Pass for Fire Emblem Engage is also going to add a number of past characters to be playable, with the three house leaders from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Tiki from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon being included in the first wave. Fans are hoping other lord characters like Seliph, Chrom, and Hector can be added in these other DLC waves.
Fire Emblem Engage is coming to Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023.
