Although most of the side content in Final Fantasy 16 is fairly generic by today's lofty standards, there are a few things that really help the game to stand out. Chief among these are the game's Notorious Mark Hunts, which have players tracking down and defeating a varied selection of powerful fiends that have been causing trouble for the people of Valisthea.

There are 32 Notorious Mark hunts in Final Fantasy 16. Defeating these powerful foes can be tricky, but finding them is arguably the bigger challenge.

There are 32 Notorious Marks in the base version of the game, with a few more being added in the Rising Tide expansion. Rather than appearing on the Hunt Board, though, these new ones are tied to DLC side quests. The Lost in the Woods quest requires players to slay a monster called Thalaos, which rewards them with a rare crafting component known as Aqueous Membrane.

How to Start the Lost in the Woods Side Quest

Players will be able to start the Lost in the Woods side quest by speaking with a young child named Ayrik, who can be found near the center of Haven after completing The Rising Tide's main questline and a few of the DLC's other side quests. Once they've agreed to help Ayrik out, players will need to head to the Swiftrun area and speak with the injured hunter, then slay the Archelon that shows up. Doing so will trigger a cutscene, which reveals that the beast Ayrik saw is actually in the nearby Riversmeet area.

How to Find and Beat Thalaos (Aqueous Membrane Location)

To find Thalaos, players will need to head to The Sunken Ruins, which is to the north of the Riversmeet Obelisk. Once there, they'll find Thalaos and a bunch of dead fiends. Thankfully, beating Thalaos is relatively simple. Players should use Leviathan's Serpent's Cry ability and keep hitting Thalaos with Tidal Torrent until it becomes staggered. Then, players should use all six of their Eikonic Abilities, which should be enough to drain at least half of its health bar. It's then a simple case of repeating this process until Thalaos is no more. Players will need to keep an eye out for its Water Wall attack, but this can be easily dodged by rolling around using the R1 button and getting behind the fiend.

Lost in the Woods Rewards

After defeating Thalaos, players will receive two pieces of Aqueous Membrane, which is one of several components needed to craft the Tonberry Knife weapon. They'll then be able to head back to Haven to turn in the quest, which, along with some Experience, will reward them with a piece of Orichalcum: another rare Final Fantasy 16 crafting component.
