The Final Fantasy series is chock-full of bafflingly powerful characters who each harbor some unique abilities. Though progressing through an entry will sometimes allow each party member to learn all skills available to them, some are restricted and can only learn a finite amount.

There are several characters in Final Fantasy who fall into this description but, sometimes, their unique ability is their only selling point. Weak party members are usually given an overpowered ability to encourage the player to utilize them on the battlefield. These skills will often outmatch all others, but they can easily be forgotten due to the wielder's lack of strength in other areas.

7 Kimahri - Final Fantasy 10

Kimahri joins the party after Yuna sets off on her pilgrimage to defeat Sin. When first encountered, he acts like an enemy and attacks Tidus, only for him to later reveal that he was merely testing the young blitzballer's strength. Though the battle with the blue-hued Ronso is brief, Kimahri excels at instilling fear in the player.

Upon joining the party, Kimahri's limits quickly become known. He has no select path to venture down on the sphere grid and thus has no truly unique abilities aside from Ronso Rage. This skill allows him to mimic the attacks of his enemies and perform some truly astonishing feats. It's just a shame that the remaining skills he keeps in his arsenal are lacking in comparison to it.

6 Relm Arrowny - Final Fantasy 6

Relm is the last character to join Terra's party before Kefka's plan is set in motion. She is a kindhearted child who, upon initial inspection, offers very little in combat. Her first encounter with Ultros, however, reveals her to have a deceptively powerful skill.

Relm can sketch quick portraits of her enemies in battle. Though this may not sound particularly groundbreaking at first, her ability to do so allows her to copy the attacks of her enemies and redirect them right back. Relm's Sketch ability is one of the most powerful skills in the game but, sadly, her remaining powers are shockingly mediocre.

5 Cait Sith

Cait Sith, Final Fantasy

Cloud and his party first meet Cait Sith during their search for Sephiroth at the Gold Saucer. Their first interaction sees the strange creature posing as a fortune-teller to earn the party's trust. He joins the party once all pleasantries have been exchanged, but Cloud remains skeptical of his intentions.

At this point in Final Fantasy 7, Cait Sith will offer very little reason to be included in the player's primary fighting squad. It is only upon experimenting with his Slots ability that the unlikely robot can truly be considered useful. If timed correctly, the Slots attack can instantly KO a boss, making it one of the most powerful skills available in the game.

4 Yuna - Final Fantasy 10

As a summoner, Yuna can call upon otherworldly god-like entities to aid her in combat. This power is exceptionally handy when she is faced with a challenging boss battle, but regular random encounters will quickly expose just how weak she is.

When it comes to close quarter combat, Yuna is arguably the weakest party member in the game. She remains this way for the majority of the story until she learns some offensive spells but, by this time, it is slightly too late for her to be considered strong. If not for her ability to call upon these frighteningly powerful beasts, there is a high chance she would never be chosen as a core party member.

3 Ignis - Final Fantasy 15

Ignis

Ignis is possibly the most loyal party member in all of Final Fantasy 15. Prior to the beginning of the game's story, he acted as a sort of mentor to Noctis, but the events of the game forced him to adopt a more guardian-esque approach to his servitude.

His adventure alongside the destined king of Insomnia sees him aiding Noctis in his endeavors, but his fighting abilities are somewhat lacking in comparison to his comrade's. His true talents are only revealed during his more relaxed moments when he prepares meals for his friends. The dishes he creates can enhance the consumer's stats, making Ignis's culinary gifts feel ridiculously overpowered depending on what he cooks.

2 Celes - Final Fantasy 6

The moments before Celes jumps off a cliff in Final Fantasy VI

There is no denying that Celes is a capable fighter, but she doesn't exactly do anything else in combat to accentuate her skills. She uses an ability known as Runic to stand out from the other thirteen playable characters, but this power can only benefit the party so much.

Once used, Runic will allow Celes to absorb the next spell cast. It can be extremely effective when faced with a powerful mage-like enemy, but there are times when it can be a hindrance. That said, it is an extremely overpowered ability when used correctly; it's just a shame her other skills aren't nearly as effective.

1 Tellah - Final Fantasy 4

Tellah is highly renowned for being one of the most powerful mages to exist in Final Fantasy 4. Those knowledgeable in magic will often idolize him and refer to him as a magical genius. That is until they discover he has forgotten all of his most powerful spells.

Tellah spends the majority of his quest to defeat Golbez transfixed on reclaiming his lost powers but, by the time he does, it's a little too late. Though his Meteor spell can deal a whopping 9,999 points of damage to all those it is aimed at, Tellah's finite amount of MP will limit the player to utilizing it only once per battle. His remaining skills are in no way nearly as powerful, making him feel a bit like a one-trick pony.
