Highlights

  • Final Fantasy and KFC are teaming up for a collaboration in Japan, with themed food products based on the game series.
  • KFC has previously collaborated with video games, including Diablo 4, and offered cosmetic rewards to players who ordered KFC products.
  • The upcoming collaboration with KFC Japan remains a mystery, but a teaser featuring silhouettes of Chocobo and Moogle has sparked speculation among fans.

Soon, Final Fantasy and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) will have a collaboration in which some themed food products based on Square Enix's series will be featured, but the collaboration will likely be exclusive to Japan. The news was revealed by KFC Japan's social media team via a poster, and that has led Final Fantasy fans to speculate what sort of products or games could be featured as part of the KFC crossover.

This is far from the first time that the chicken giant has crossed over with video games. Back in May 2023, KFC hosted a collaboration with Diablo 4 to coincide with the game's June 6 release. During the event, users who connected their KFC and Battle.net accounts could score some cosmetic rewards in Diablo 4 by ordering KFC products available locally. However, the crossover had a few snags at first, and Diablo 4 players needed to order at least $25 worth of KFC products in order to get all available cosmetics. As for the upcoming crossover, KFC remained tight-lipped about what to expect but showed off a small glimpse to tide Final Fantasy fans over.

On Twitter, KFC Japan posted a screenshot featuring the silhouettes of a Chocobo and a Moogle, the adorable mascots of the Final Fantasy series, along with the date of Wednesday, October 4. With more news to come in early October, the date lines up with the release window for Final Fantasy 14's final major update for the Endwalker expansion, Growing Light. While Final Fantasy fans speculated what items or games could be featured as part of the collaboration with KFC Japan, some fans joked about Chocobos being sent to the deep fryer instead of chicken.

However, this is not the only recent food and beverage venture that the Final Fantasy franchise has taken in 2023. As part of the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy 14, Square Enix announced a collaboration with the Nagahama Distillery for three types of whiskey based on the game's starting cities of Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul'dah. Like the upcoming collaboration with KFC, the promotion with Nagahama Distillery is exclusive to Japan. However, worldwide shipping of the whiskey is still available at the time of writing.

Between the upcoming crossover with KFC Japan, and a wave of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth news, Final Fantasy fans are eating good as summer draws to a close. Only time will tell what other surprises Square Enix has in store for fans in the future.
