Final Fantasy is a role-playing game that is heavily influenced by the fantasy genre, consisting of numerous otherworldly areas for the player to explore. To progress throughout each game's immersive story, the player will likely have to venture through a series of locations rife with valuable treasure and challenging enemies.

Each entry in the series has incorporated this dungeon concept in some shape or form. Once typically presented in the form of caves and enemy bases, the idea of a dungeon has evolved to encompass an array of unique areas. Final Fantasy is renowned for the difficulty of many of its dungeons, but some are more challenging than others.

10 Cavern Of Ice - Final Fantasy

Cavern Of Ice - Final Fantasy

If the complicated design of the Cavern of Ice wasn't difficult enough to comprehend, the enemies lurking behind its frozen corners certainly are. This frozen fortress features some of the most difficult random encounters the game has to offer.

The player will encounter several cracked tiles as they delve further into the cavern's depths. Presumed to be traps, the player will likely aim to avoid them at all costs only to realize that they must fall through them if they hope to progress further. The further the player descends, the more dangerous the enemies become, with most being able to wipe out the party in one fell swoop.

9 Costlemark Tower - Final Fantasy 15

Costlemark Tower in FF15

Though its exterior may appear more inviting than most dungeons in the series, the horror that lurks beneath Costlemark Tower proves to be just as challenging as it is frightening. Made up of 60 floors, the descent of Costlemark provides the player with one of the greatest challenges in the game.

Each floor contains a level 99 enemy, but Bilröst, the boss of the dungeon, is the most difficult to beat. Even if the player loads up on Ignis' delectable meals beforehand, victory is never guaranteed. The player can easily be bested by this terrifying foe, causing them to spawn at the entrance of the dungeon once more. The Costlemark Tower is the most unforgiving dungeon in the game.

8 Centra Ruins - Final Fantasy 8

The Centra Ruins in FF8

The Cetra Ruins harbor one of Final Fantasy 8's most arduous challenges. Many will journey to this decrepit structure in the hope of obtaining the King Tonberry summon, but the random encounters in these ruins render it a laborious task.

Each encounter in the Cetra Ruins will task the player with defeating a Tonberry, a recurring enemy renowned for its ability to quickly decimate a party. If Squall defeats 20 of these deceptively sweet creatures without leaving, he will be forced into a battle with King Tonberry, a frighteningly large Tonberry who sports a crown.

7 Gelnika - Final Fantasy 7

While exploring the ocean's floor, Cloud and his party may happen upon a wrecked sea vessel known as the Gelnika. This optional dungeon houses some of the most powerful Materia in the game, but to obtain them as rewards, the player must battle their way through a barrage of devastating foes.

The Gelnika also serves as an arena for the penultimate boss battle against Reno and Rude, two Turk members who are hellbent on bringing Cloud's journey to an end. If the player wanders into the Gelnika unprepared, they may soon find themselves staring at a game-over screen.

6 Lhusu Mines - Final Fantasy 12

The Lhusu Mines in FF12

Located in the Sky City of Bhujerba, the Lhusu Mine is a deceptively simple dungeon during the early stages of the game. It is only upon returning to this vast cave system during the late game that the player will gain access to its true challenges.

The final areas in this dungeon house some of the most dangerous enemies in the game, with Disma posing the biggest threat. The player will likely venture to this mine's depths to complete the Battle on the Big Bridge hunt, but the journey to these far reaches possesses nearly as much threat as the boss fight at the end.

5 Iron Giant's Cave - Final Fantasy 3

The Iron Giant in FF3

The Iron Giant's Cave is a secret dungeon located in the far reaches of the ocean. To gain access to this water-submerged pit, the player must have received four letters from Prince Alus and the Fellows, a surprisingly difficult task to complete.

Consisting of only one floor, this dungeon appears to pose little threat, but it is by far the most dangerous location in the game. While here, the player will encounter several dragons that act as the game's most difficult random encounters. With the bafflingly powerful Iron Giant lurking in the cave's depths, this tiny dungeon proves itself to be one of the most dangerous in the series.

4 Omega Ruins - Final Fantasy 10

Tidus will get the opportunity to explore the vast reaches of Spira upon gaining access to Cid's airship. If the player opts to explore the new areas only accessible via this airship, they may stumble across the hidden coordinates of the Omega Ruins, the game's most frightening dungeon.

Auron will explain to the party that this haunting dungeon is home to a retired priest known as Omega. On their journey to send this elusive being to the Farplane, the party will encounter an array of terrifying foes, with the Marlboro posing the biggest threat. The enemies here can inflict a variety of devastating status effects on the party, so it is recommended that the player equips as many Ribbons as possible.

3 Subterra - Final Fantasy 12

Subterra in FF12

Upon besting Cid and Gabranth atop the Pharos of Ridorana, Vaan and his allies will have the option to return to this distant land and dive deeper into its depths. The enemies lurking in the confines of this tower's underground make the journey to the tower's summit seem like a cakewalk in comparison.

Shrouded in darkness, Vaan will need to collect glowing orbs to light the way. This forces the player to explore each area of the dungeon, no matter how intimidating it may be. Home to the Shadowseer, a powerful summoner who lost its way, Subterra poses the greatest threat the game has to offer.

2 Via Infinito - Final Fantasy X-2

The Via Infinito in FFX-2

Only truly dedicated players will be able to conquer the endless abyss known as the Via Infinito. Located beneath the thriving city of Bevelle, this dungeon poses the greatest challenge to Yuna and her companions present in the entire game.

RELATED: JRPGs That Are Cheesy But Charming

The Via Infinito consists of 100 floors crawling with some of the game's most powerful enemies. As the player descends further downward they will have to face a series of challenging bosses who take the form of unsent antagonists from the past. Upon reaching the final floor, the party will be forced to face Trema, the most powerful enemy in the game.

1 Pitioss Ruins - Final Fantasy 15

Noctis exploring the Pitioss Ruins in FF15

Those intending to best the challenges of Pitioss may find solace in the dungeon's lack of enemies, but this feature does not diminish its difficulty. Focusing entirely on platforming, this dungeon tasks the player with familiarizing themselves with Noctis' limited movement abilities.

Final Fantasy 15 is not a platformer, so navigating the treacherous twists and turns of Pitioss is far from a simple task. If the player slips up and falls into the abyss, they will quickly learn how unforgiving the checkpoint system of this dungeon is.
