Final Fantasy 8 (one of the best games in the series) introduced one of the most unique mechanics in the entire franchise. Rather than relying on grids or leveling-up bonuses, character stat development is achieved through the Junction System, which involves collecting and stocking magic and applying them to individual stats. Magic can be obtained from draw points, refining items, or through enemies.

The 5 Best Things About Final Fantasy 8 Remastered (& The 5 Worst)

The Final Fantasy 8 remaster wasn't as great as some had hoped it would be. Here's what it did right and what it got wrong.

With 50 different magic spells to junction, players may find themselves experimenting with ineffective configurations, which can hinder their gameplay. As the party's stats rely on optimizing junctions, knowing the best magic for functioning in FF8 can completely change a character's effectiveness, thus improving the player's experience.

Updated on October 30, 2023, by Rhenn Taguiam: With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth resuming the much-awaited soft reboot of the Final Fantasy 7 storyline, fans of the Final Fantasy franchise may be eager to replay other classic titles to get a feel of their tales before they get the FF7 Remake treatment. One such fan-favorite title would be Final Fantasy 8, whose focus on a love story alongside more realistic graphics helped it become quite a memorable title for the franchise’s PS1 entries. And for fans who want to ensure Squall and his friends are strong enough in their playthroughs, they may want to consider using certain Junctions to capitalize on specific traits, such as focusing on defenses against Status Effects and boosting Elemental Defense.

18 Berserk

Acquired Through GF Diablos’s ST Mag-RF

Berserk

Serving as the equivalent of the aggressive portion of the Confuse status ailment in Pokemon, the Berserk Spell in FF8 gameplay attempts to “anger” its target. When successful, that target can’t use any action except to Attack random targets. Ideally, Berserk can be used against spellcasters who have weak Physical Attack, which can drastically lessen their damage. Players can use Berserk on their own party as well, especially if they have someone who prefers going physical.

However, in terms of Junctioning, Berserk is ideally used for ST-DEF-J to resist specifically against the same status. Granting Berserk immunity at 100 Berserks can debilitate the strategies of durable enemies such as Malboros, especially since Berserk is also a permanent status. Players can get Berserk via refining Magic Stones and Steel Pipes via GF Diablos’s ST Mag-RF.

17 Shell

Acquired From Blobra & Gesper

Shell

When it comes to defensive spells in the Final Fantasy title, Shell is perhaps one of its most useful in the mid-game. Casting Shell grants the status of the same name, imbuing the target with a barrier that auto-halves all Magic Damage for a certain time. In turn, Shell becomes the magical equivalent of Protect, which has the same effect but for Physical Damage. This can be acquired from the likes of Blobra and Gesper or refining various items (Shell Stone, Barrier, Rune Armlet, Moon Curtain) via GF Leviathan’s Supt Mag-RF.

Junction-wise, Shell can be used primarily in two ways. Among its stats, Shell can provide a decent +0.40 boost in Spirit. However, its Elem-DEF-J effect also allows it to give as much as +0.20% protection against all types of elemental damage.

16 Quake

Acquired By Refining Dino Bone Via Time Mag-RF

Quake Spell

Being the only Earth-based elemental spell, Quake is a must-have in any Final Fantasy spellcaster’s arsenal, especially when facing foes weak to the element. Even when attacking other foes (except Flying and Earth-based enemies), Quake’s innate AOE makes it a powerful combat spell. Players can get Quake more frequently from higher-level opponents such as the Abyss Worm, Lefty, and T-Rexaur or via refining Dino Bone via Time Mag-RF.

When it comes to Junctioning, Quake makes for a decent Elem-DEF-J Junction due to its capability of letting characters absorb Earth damage. This perk immediately poses an advantage against FF8 bosses that use a powered-up version of Quake such as Adel, Gargantua, and even the Ultima Weapon.

15 Holy

Acquired From Holy Stone Or Moon Stone

Holy

Similar to Holy in Final Fantasy 7, Holy in FF8 is also one of the rarest spells in the game. When cast, Holy is not only the sole provider of Holy Element Damage in the game, it also dishes out tremendous damage when cast. However, Holy is also extremely rare, as it can only be refined via the Holy Stone or Moon Stone via L Mag-RF, or certain locations in the game such as the White SeeD Ship cabin, Ultimecia Castle Treasure Room, and Cape of Good Hope.

From the tranquil coastal town of Balamb to the vast and futuristic Esthar City, we've ranked every town in Final Fantasy 8 from worst to best.

Due to its rarity, Holy is best stockpiled instead of cast except for Rinoa’s Angel Wing as it doesn’t use up the spell. Likewise, Holy is one of the best spells to Junction due to its immensely high bonuses to HP, Strength, and even Magic. Ideally, Holy is best used against Status Effects, as its ST-DEF-J components enable characters to resist debilitating statuses such as Berserk, Confuse, Curse, Drain, Sudden Death, Poison, Sleep, and Zombie for +0.40%.

14 Double

Acquired From Enemies Like Cerberus & Grendel

Double in Final Fantasy 8

Casting as many spells as possible is always a welcome damage boost to any situation. With Double, players can do exactly that. When activated, Double allows characters to cast two spells within a single turn. When Junctioned, Double gives the fourth-best HIT boost at 0.40. This is just below Triple (1.50), Ultima (0.60), and Aura (0.50).

Double boasts a Draw Resist of 16, but it’s obtained across Levels 1 to 100. Players need to pay attention to Cerberus, Einoyle, Elvoret, Gerogero, Grendel, Minotaur, Odin, and Sorceress to secure this Magic.

13 Haste

Acquired From Enemies Like Cactuar & Sorceress

Haste in Final Fantasy 8

As its name suggests, Haste boosts its target speed for a particular duration. Being the counterpart of Slow, Haste can give allies a much-needed reflex boost to clutch moves at the right moment. When junctioned, Haste is the third-best booster when it comes to SPD with its 0.50 increase, just below Ultima’s 0.60 and Triple’s 0.70.

Despite having a Draw Resist of 18, Haste is obtainable across Levels 1 to 100. Players need to pay attention to Cactuar, GIM52A, Iron Giant, Sorceress, Tri-Point, and Vysage to obtain them. In terms of characters, players can obtain Haste from Biggs, Seifer, and Ultimecia.

12 Regen

Acquired From Behemoth, Rinoa, Biggs, Or The Ultimate Weapon

Regen in Final Fantasy 8

Befitting its name, Regen packs quite a punch as a healing spell. At its core, Regen bestows healing over time to allies. And when Junctioned, Regen provided a decent bonus to HP (26) as well as a remarkable 0.70 VIT increase. This makes Regen a powerhouse Vit booster behind rarer Spells such as Ultima, Full Life, Apocalypse, and Meltdown.

Regen has quite a high Draw Resist of 36, but it can be obtained across Levels 1 to 100. In this manner, players need to pay attention to Behemoth, grab it from Rinoa, and acquire it from the Ultimate Weapon. Biggs can also give this Magic as well. From Levels 30 to 100, Lefty can provide Regen as well.

11 Flare

Acquired From Enemies Like Sorceress & Mobile Type 8

Flare in Final Fantasy 8

Across stats, Flare offers decent bonuses in terms of HP (32), STR (0.56), and MAG (0.44). Given its multifaceted properties, players can enjoy slotting in Flare in terms of stat bonuses and even as a combative spell in itself. It packs a decent punch against most foes, making Flare useful across all fronts.

Flare has a tough Draw Resist of 40, but can be obtained across Levels 1 to 100. In this manner, players can obtain this from Bahamut, Mobile Type 8, Omega Weapon, Sorceress, Tiamat, and Ultimecia in the final boss battle. From Level 30, players can get this from Abadon, Diablos, and Tri-Face. Players can also get Flare from Behemoth starting Level 40, and from Ruby Dragon beginning Level 45.

10 Meteor

Acquired By Refining Meteor Stones & Star Fragments

An effective non-elemental offensive spell, Meteor is great for both junction and combat. It deals damage in 10 separate intervals with varying damage outputs and provides the second-highest Strength boost and third-highest HP boost. With Ultima and Full-Life topping both respective stats, Meteor could prove useful for junctioning to Strength to optimize Ultima's versatility elsewhere.

Ruby Dragons are the easiest way to draw Meteor, as they only need to be level 45+ to qualify. For refining, the two items needed are Meteor Stones and Star Fragments. Star Fragments are easier to obtain through the Iron Giants, an easily locatable enemy, which have a 100% Mug rate and varying item-drop rates for Star Fragments.

9 Full-Life

Acquired From Tonberry King, Bahamut, Or Fujin

Final Fantasy 8 Irvine Squall Casting Full-Life On Selphie

As the name suggests, Full-Life is a restorative spell that brings a KO'd character back with full HP. Being one of the better restorative spells, it provides a massive stat boost when junctioned to HP and Vitality (second only to Ultima). Full-Life is best junctioned to HP since Ultima should be reserved for offensive stats and Vitality can be covered by Meltdown.

Computer graphics artist CG_YasinSafak has begun recreating scenes and locations from Final Fantasy 8, starting with the Balamb Gardens infirmary.

With its high curative powers, naturally, this spell is harder to find. The greatest strategy for banking Full-Life is to wait to battle Tonberry King at level 30+, as it is one of the only enemies Full-Life can be drawn from besides Bahamut and Fujin (second encounter). Siren's L Magic-RF ability can turn Regen Rings (easily Mugged from Torama in Esther City) and Phoenix Spirits into Full-Life as well.

8 Triple

Acquired From Odin & Ceberus

Final Fantasy 8 Cerberus Fight Irvine Triple Squall Rinoa

Triple is a spell that allows characters to cast three spells in a turn. It's the only spell that beats Ultima in two stat boosts: Speed and Hit. Because of the exponential difference between the two spells with the best stat boost when junctioned to Hit (Triple with a 150 bonus vs. Ultima's 60), the strategic choice would be junctioning Triple to Hit and allowing Haste or Ultima to cover Speed.

While Triple is considered rarer than many, there are ways to work around this. Players can bank Triples by drawing from Odin and Cerberus, or can abuse Double's simpler acquisition and use Alexander's High Mag-RF to turn Doubles into Triples. Like many other powerful spells, Triple can be found at draw points located at the Island Closest to Heaven, Island Closest to Hell, and in Ultimecia's Castle.

7 Reflect

Acquired From Variety Of Enemies Or Dragon Skins Refinement

Final Fantasy 8 Rinoa Squall Zell Casting Reflect

Characters with Reflect cast on them are temporarily immune to magic attacks, reflecting any magic cast back at the caster. Of the numerous junction combinations, Reflect is the prime magic to junction to Spirit, ranking as the third-highest after Ultima (which would be wasted junctioned to Spirit) and Apocalypse.

Compared to other spells on this list, Reflect is not as hard to obtain (though it is one of the greatest). It can be drawn from Base Leaders, Gargantua, Iron Giants, Adamantoise, Biobra, Death Claws, SAM08Gs, and Ruby Dragons. Dragon Skins are the items players should seek for refining Reflects, using Leviathan's Supt Mag-RF. While not able to draw Reflect from, Anacondaurs are the enemies that provide the best chance for obtaining Dragon Skins with their high drop rates.

6 Aura

Acquired From Seifer

Final Fantasy 8 Selphie Casting Aura On Squall Zell

One of the most vital spells in Final Fantasy 8 is Aura, which increases the chance to trigger a character's Limit Break without leaving them in critical HP. It boasts an incredible increase to Luck and delivers one of the higher stat boosts to Strength. Ultimately, it would serve best junctioned to Luck as Strength can be covered by numerous other effective spells.

Final Fantasy 8: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Rinoa

Rinoa is one of the most beloved characters in all of Final Fantasy, but she has interesting quirks in-game and behind the scenes you may not know of.

Aura is perhaps one of the hardest spells to obtain. The only enemy it can be drawn from is Seifer in the Lunatic Pandora, making it a particularly late-game procurement. A painless way to stock Aura (without waiting until Disc 3's conclusion) is through farming Fury Fragments from Blue Dragons, Grendels, and Ruby Dragons, as the item can be refined into Aura using Leviathan's Supt Mag-RF. Blue Dragons have a 100% Mug rate for Fury Fragments, making them notable of the three mentioned.

5 Tornado

Acquired Through Quezacotl's T Mag-RF

Final Fantasy 8 Zell Drawing Squall Irvine

Tornado is the greatest Wind-elemental magic in the game, able to deal massive damage to multiple enemies. Besides its usefulness when elementally junctioned to deal/absorb Wind damage, it's a fantastic stat boost to Evasion and Speed. It's the optimal junction for Evasion since other magic that boast a similarly high boost to this stat is better junctioned on others.

An early way to acquire Tornado is through Quezacotl's T Mag-RF, which can refine Windmills into 20 Tornados. Significant enemies for drawing include Abyss Worms, Thrustaevis, and Behemoths. Alternatively, Aero can be refined into Tornado using Alexander's High Mag-RF.

4 Curaga

Acquired Through Siren's L Mag-RF Or From Enemies

Final Fantasy 8 Overworld Curaga Draw Point Squall

Among the restorative magic, Curaga is the most powerful. Although it doesn't top any stat boosts, it's effective across the board (with particularly beneficial coverage when junctioned to HP, Vitality, and Spirit). Therefore, it works as an excellent placeholder for other magics that the player may want to utilize elsewhere or in battle.

This spell can be acquired early due to Siren's L Mag-RF, using it to refine Tents into 10 Curaga and Cottages into 20. It can also utilize Alexander's High Mag-RF to turn Cura (which are easier to obtain) into Curaga. In comparison to other higher-level spells, it can be drawn from more enemies that appear frequently, including Anacondaurs, G-Soldiers, Sphinxaurs, and Esther Soldiers.

3 Meltdown

Acquired From Bombs, Elastoids, Or Gayla

Final Fantasy 8 Omega Weapon Fight Casting Meltdown

Featuring the ability to drop a target's Vitality and Spirit to 0, Meltdown obliterates defenses by rendering targets completely vulnerable to magic and physical attacks. Beyond this devastating ability, it provides one of the top stat boosts to Vitality, making it a perfect junction for it.

Why Final Fantasy 8 Deserves the Remake Treatment

While fans had begged and received a Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 8 is arguably the only entry in the franchise that needs a remake.

There are three high-level enemies players should look for to draw Meltdown: Bombs (one of the franchise's most iconic monsters), Elastoids, and Gayla. Of these, Gayla are significant, since they also supply Mysterious Fluids via Mug or dropping. Diablo's ST Mag-RF turns a single Mystery Fluid into 10 Meltdowns, making Gayla a Meltdown factory.

2 Pain

Acquired From Enemies Like Tri-Faces & Ochus

Final Fantasy 8 Tri-Face Battle Zell Squall Rinoa

Aptly named for what it makes you feel when inflicted with it, Pain is an effect spell that induces Darkness, Silence, and Poison. Providing functional support by either inducing its many effects or making a character immune through elemental junctions, Pain acts as strong magic to junction across numerous stats. It ties with Aura for second-best Luck boost, is within the top 5 for Magic boost, and is notable for both HP and Strength. As such, it does not have a strict junction placement and can provide support anywhere the player needs it.

Enemies to look out for to draw Pain include Elnoyle, Tri-Faces, and Ochus. Tri-Face also imparts Curse Spikes, a helpful item for refining Pain through Diablo's St Mag-RF ability.

1 Ultima

Acquired In Shumi Village Or Ultima Weapon & Omega Weapon Enemies

Final Fantasy 8 Ultima Draw Point Location Squall Zell

Undoubtedly, Ultima is the best magic spell for both junctioning and combat, as it's the most powerful non-elemental magic spell (only beaten by Apocalypse, which exclusively is drawn from Ultimecia). It tops the stat boost in almost all junctions, but statistically suits being junctioned to Strength, Magic, or Speed since other magic can fill the other stats.

Due to its junctioning capabilities, it's no surprise that Ultima is hard to obtain, and knowing all places it can be found will aid any player. Most notably, it can be continually drawn in Shumi Village for a recurring 5000 gil fee. Alternatively, it can be drawn from Ultima Weapon and Omega Weapon (two optional superbosses), and it has single-use draw points at Fisherman's Horizon, Lunatic Pandora, Deep Sea Research Center, Ultimecia's Castle, and the two islands. Bahamut's Forbid Mag-RF can refine Ultima from Ultima Stones, Energy Crystals, Pulse Ammo, and Dark Matter.
