Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura has recently revealed that the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy will link up to Advent Children at the end. Many intriguing pieces of information regarding the trilogy have been coming out lately, such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s massive file size, and this latest update will certainly please fans of the 2005 movie.

The Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children movie was released back in 2005, and it acted as a continuation of the original game's storyline. With a story set two years after FF7, the movie saw Cloud returning to action, and facing off against new enemies while the hero investigated children stricken by a mysterious illness. Advent Children even received a 4K remaster in 2021.

Now, the director in charge of the Final Fantasy 7 remake project, Tetsuya Nomura, has confirmed to The Guardian that the third game of the trilogy will connect with Advent Children by its end. Nomura previously worked as the director for Advent Children, so it’s not surprising that he would be interested in connecting these stories. However, despite talking a lot about Final Fantasy 7’s inspiration and design during the interview, Nomura was rather mysterious about this and did not unveil more information about this connection.

The trilogy is taking quite a few liberties to change Final Fantasy 7 in several ways so far, as well as giving more attention to previously small parts of the game, so it remains to be seen how it will connect to Advent Children. For instance, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will have Sephiroth as a playable character for an extended period during some parts of Nibelheim, instead of a very short section like in the original.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be out early next year, but the final part of the trilogy, and the connection with Advent Children, may still be far off. Recently, the Square Enix developers revealed that they have started to draft the story of the third game in FF7’s remake trilogy, and have only completed the first part of it so far. Considering that Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released in 2020, and the second entry in the trilogy will only be available by 2024, it’s not an exaggeration to expect the trilogy to end at around 2027 or 2028.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will launch on February 29, 2024 for PS5.
