Chocobo Chick, Carbuncle, and Cactuar are three special Summons that players can obtain as DLC by pre-ordering Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The game revealed that it would feature them some time ago but never displayed their new designs.
Today, however, through some new screenshots, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has finally unveiled the new redesigns for Chocobo Chick, Carbuncle, and Cactuar. It's also provided a little detail about how each Summon works to provide support for the player.
Chocobo Chick is a baby Chocobo that's also sometimes called chocochick, chicobo, or chickling. As its name implies, Chocobo Chick looks like a baby chicken. But, despite its infancy, this Summon can inflict some severe magical damage when called upon, as it flies around the field attacking enemies with fire spells.
The next Summon, Carbuncle, looks like a white puppy with a red gem in the center of its forehead, and it works a bit differently from the other two Summons. Instead of attacking and inflicting damage, Carbuncle uses its mystical powers to empower players and their allies. It can, for instance, cast spells like Barrier to protect players in a pinch.
Last but not least, there's Cactuar, whose design didn't really change all that much. Cactuar is an anthropomorphic cactus, and like Chocobo Chick, it assists players by attacking opponents. However, instead of flying around and spitting fire, Cactuar runs around the battlefield, spraying things with needles.
Overall, fans' reactions to the new Summon designs are little mixed. Everyone seems to be okay with Cactuar, which isn't surprising because its design isn't really different from how it always looks. However, Chocobo Chick and Carbuncle are under fire. Both Summons seem to share the same flaw of having giant foreheads. The disproportions have caused fans to meme the two by comparing them to other big-headed characters, such as Megamind for Carbuncle and Super Saiyan Vegeta for Chocobo Chick.
The consensus is that Square Enix made a mistake with Chocobo Chick and Carbuncle's designs, which seems likely as it's hard to miss how overtly large Chocobo Chick and Carbuncle's heads look in comparison to their eyes, maw, and beak. Whether or not Square Enix will change anything remains a mystery, though.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake will launch for the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020.
