One of PlayStation's most shocking E3 surprises was the announcement of the long-awaited Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with the game pushed as one of the PS4's biggest exclusive titles. After a lengthy development cycle, Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched last year as a PS4 exclusive game, standing as one of the top-rated PS4 exclusives that released in all of 2020. However, a new rumor suggests that the game's PS4 exclusivity may soon be coming to an end.

Industry insider KatharsisT has suggested that Square Enix will announce Final Fantasy 7 Remake ports at some point later this year. Apparently, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to PC and PlayStation 5, with the PS5 version not too far off. It's long been expected that Final Fantasy 7 Remake's PS4 exclusivity would be limited-time, though KatharsisT made no mention of the game coming to any of PlayStation's competing consoles.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was never going to stay exclusive to the PS4 permanently, so it's not all that surprising that there are rumblings of PC and PS5 ports. After all, April will mark one year since Final Fantasy 7 Remake's launch, and oftentimes these exclusivity deals last about a year. It's unclear if this means that a possible Final Fantasy 7 Remake Xbox port is in the cards as well, though that's been rumored in the past. Maybe it will come eventually, but perhaps the PC and PS5 ports are in line first. Until Square Enix makes an official announcement, all fans can do is speculate.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS4 PS5

If the rumors of a Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS5 port are true, it will be interesting to see what it brings to the table. After all, the PS5 has unique features that aren't available on the PS4, including significantly faster load times and the DualSense controller. And if Final Fantasy 7 Remake is getting a proper PS5 release with new bells and whistles, one has to wonder if Square Enix will be releasing it as a standalone game or if those that already own the PS4 version will be treated to a free upgrade.

Of course, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is technically playable on the PS5 already. Thanks to the PlayStation 5's backward compatibility with PS4, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and a host of other FF titles are available on Sony's next-generation console right out of the gate. However, it would still be nice to see an upgraded version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake that takes full advantage of the PlayStation 5's capabilities.

Besides potential Final Fantasy 7 Remake ports, fans may also want to learn more about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2, which will continue the story where the original game left off. Some recent Square Enix trademarks suggest that more information on that game will come later this year, so fans should keep an eye out.
