A reliable source confirmed that the beloved character Vincent Valentine will be portrayed in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth by Matt Mercer, though neither the voice actor nor Square Enix have officially confirmed the news at the time of writing. During the September 14 State of Play trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, many fans were quick to point out that Vincent Valentine's voice sounded similar to Mercer's, and the source confirmed their guesses were correct.

As one of the more tragic characters from the original Final Fantasy 7, Vincent Valentine's dark and brooding personage has endeared Final Fantasy fans to him for decades. However, he was considered an optional character that players went out of their way to acquire, as he is the only party member aside from Barret to use firearms as his weapon of choice. Though Vincent only appeared towards the latter part of the FF7 Rebirth trailer that confirmed the release date of February 29, 2024, his deep and menacing voice was almost immediately recognized by viewers. Thanks to a reliable source, their guesses were validated.

According to a source that was corroborated by DualShockers, Matt Mercer will take over for Steve Blum as the voice of Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. While Blum voiced the character in the sequel movie Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children and the PS2 game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7, the entire list of characters was recast for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. With FF7 Rebirth having nearly 100 hours of content, it remains to be seen how long gamers will need to play in order to have Vincent join the party. In the original Final Fantasy 7, Vincent was found sleeping in a coffin within the Shinra Mansion. But, the room that held the coffin could only be accessed by entering the correct combination to a safe and defeating the optional boss called Lost Number.

Known for his work as the DM of the critically acclaimed tabletop web series Critical Role, Mercer was also the voice of Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Between his work as the Demon King and other roles such as Cole Cassidy in Overwatch, Mercer's gravelly and intimidating voice was immediately picked up by viewers during the FF7 Rebirth trailer, with some taking to social media to voice their excitement. At the time of writing, neither Mercer nor Square Enix had confirmed the news.

With a bevy of mini-games and side activities to do, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may be one of the best values for money as far as PS5 titles go. Only time will tell what else the FF7 development team will reveal.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29, 2024, for PS5.
