A developer for Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth wants the new title's combat to surpass Final Fantasy 12. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks to improve various aspects of combat from its predecessor while continuing an exciting story as the second part of the Remake trilogy.Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was officially announced during the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Celebration in June 2022 alongside the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade for Steam. The reveal trailer depicted a conversation between Cloud and Sephiroth with the latter discussing his plans for the planet and his ultimate endgame. Square Enix would confirm a winter 2023 release window for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but the company would shy away from sharing more information due to the game's active development. This past December, producer Yoshinori Kitase stated more news about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would come when the time is right.RELATED: Final Fantasy 7's Success in the West is Credited to PlayStation TechLead battle programmer Satoru Koyama wants Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to surpass Final Fantasy 12 according to an interview from the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Ultimania guide book, which was translated and shared online by Twitter user @ShinraArch. Specifically, Koyama wants Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's to have an AI-based system that would surpass Final Fantasy 12's Gambit system. Once complete, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's system would allow AI-controlled party members to "juggle a variety of techniques and magic" while being able to attack and guard independently.

In Final Fantasy 12, the Gambit system allowed players to specific behaviors for party members and determine how they would typically act in combat. Koyama wants to finalize a similar AI system for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth while making use of current generation technology. The battle programmer claims this would be his ultimate goal for the new game, but further details were not shared regarding combat.

The new AI system would strengthen the party's fighting prowess while player focuses on the character they are controlling in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. For instance, a player may directly focus on controlling Cloud in a combat scenario while Aerith assists with magic that remedies aliments or slows opponents. The AI controlling Tifa and Barret would likely adapt to combat as the party faces more enemies throughout the course of the game. Further, creating the best possible Materia set-up for each party member would be even more important going forward since the AI may use magic and exploit weaknesses.

Koyama's goal for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is ambitious just like the story being told in the Remake trilogy, and it may bring forth innovative new ideas for Square Enix going forward. This advanced AI system would be a boon for players that seek to challenge the new game on the hardest difficulty available as well. For now, fans should look forward to the release of Final Fantasy 16 this summer while waiting on more news about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
