In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, players have access to several systems, both new and old, that will increase the strength of the party when utilized correctly. One such system that is new to this game is the Folio system, allowing players to upgrade each character using SP earned from exploring the world, leveling up, and completing quests.

By unlocking new skills from a character's Folio in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, players are able to gain passive bonuses and new active abilities. Some of these are available to multiple characters, while others are exclusive to a certain character's Folio. Many of the unlockables in a given character's Folio will be Synergy Skills, allowing them to perform new special attacks by teaming up with other members of the party.

How Folios Work

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth_Maghnata Books

Players will be introduced to the Folio system at the start of Chapter 2 while exploring Kalm. When visiting Maghnata Books players will be offered a brief tutorial to explain the functionality of Folios. Each character in the Party has their own Folio, which contains a series of connected nodes (called "Skill Cores" by the game) that can be unlocked by spending Skill Points (SP). Many of the early Skill Cores can be unlocked for a cost of 5 SP, but this cost will increase as players move further into the Folio.

Skill Cores can provide passive and/or active abilities to the character, such as unlocking Synergy Abilities or providing a boost to damage dealt when using a character's special mechanics (like Red XIII's Vengeance Mode, for example.) Often, players will find elemental damage abilities that do not expend MP in a Character's Folio, which will also boost spell damage of that type dealt by that character when unlocked. (Fiery Impulse, for example, allows a character to perform a Fire attack without spending MP and also boosts the damage of their fire materia spells)

Synergy Skills, which can be accessed while blocking and allow two party members to team up in various ways, are also found in a character's Folio. The powerful team-up attacks known as Synergy Abilities can also be found here. (Cloud and Aerith's Firework Blade ability, for example.)

Furthermore, Folios are tied to the Party Level mechanic, with new Skill Cores appearing as the Party Level increases. This means players should endeavor to increase their Party Level if they want to take full advantage of Folios. Party level can be increased by exploring the world, helping people in need, and overcoming challenges. Players will earn the Skill Points needed to unlock new Skill Cores by leveling up, but they can also get more SP by finding Manuscripts. These special items will grant SP to the relevant character when found and can usually be obtained as sidequest rewards or by purchasing them from the Moogle Emporiums.
