The associate producer and co-director of the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth states that the story for the third part of the FF7 remake trilogy is already being drafted. Fans don't have to wait long for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, with the latest trailer for the game finally nailing down a release date: February 29, 2024. The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth trailer also gave plenty for fans to look forward to, showing off the game's expanded combat, the variety of side activities, and its intriguing story that is teased to be different from the original FF7.

Fans got a more extended look at the game, thanks to the ongoing Tokyo Game Show, which Square Enix was also present for. This included a gameplay showcase of Rebirth at TGS, which included plenty of footage from the game, which showed off how Red XIII was playable, the ability to swim, and the vast field that players can explore. Alongside this showcase, co-director Naoki Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase were present at a special Samsung livestream during TGS to talk about Rebirth, where Kitase mentioned they have started drafting the third game's story.

In this livestream (with the clip translated by Twitter user aitaikimochi), Kitase mentions that they're already started on the scenarios and plot of the entry after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. According to Kitase, co-director Tetsuya Nomura, writer Kazushige Nojima, and himself have completed what he calls the "first part." He then brings up that he'd like for fans to post their feedback regarding Rebirth, which will help influence some elements of the story based on their reactions.

According to aitaikimochi, based on Kitase's reaction and comments during this interview, it doesn't necessarily imply that the third game's story would drastically alter the majorly established story beats just based on the player's reaction to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Rather, it sounds like Kitase is asking for players to post their reactions online and discuss the game since the team really enjoys how players react to the games they make.

The story of Rebirth is looking to be very intriguing, as it only retells the portion of the story up until the Fallen Capital, but also has some emphasis on the fallout of Cloud's actions from the prior entry. Between an episode focused on Zack Fair's survival and the implication of multiple timelines being merged, fans will just need to wait and see what Square Enix has planned for this game and how it will lead into the next.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will launch on February 29, 2024 for PS5.
