The developers behind the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth recently hinted at how far along the yet-untitled third game in the saga is, giving fans a clue as to when they can expect to see it. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now just over a week away from release, with players already able to experience a small fraction of its story in a free demo that shows Cloud’s flashback to the fateful Nibelhiem incident that serves as the backdrop for much of the FF7 plotline. A second Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth demo is set to launch on February 21 that will let fans explore a condensed Junon region.

This will lead up to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s full release on February 29, but some fans are already looking ahead to the third and last chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. Little is officially known about this third FF7 game, but much of its story can be guessed from what has been confirmed about its immediate predecessor. FF7 Rebirth will end with the party’s journey to the Forgotten Capital, which marks a major turning point in the original Final Fantasy 7 lore.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is More Like 7 Remake and Less Like Crisis Core Reunion in an Important Way

A lot of content is included in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but thankfully, it measures completion like FF7 Remake instead of Crisis Core Reunion.

The third FF7 game will presumably pick up from this point and run all the way through the rest of the original’s plotline, and now fans have a major clue about when they might see this final installment. In a recent interview with French gaming journalist Julien Chieze, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed how they have already started work on the next game. While they didn't go into too much detail, Hamaguchi noted that his team started development on FF7 Rebirth toward the end of Remake and that they are currently "in the same situation" with Rebirth’s eventual follow-up.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Could Be 4 Years Away

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was released roughly four years after FF7 Remake, so if Hamaguchi is correct then the much-anticipated third chapter could take about the same amount of time to be produced. Back in September, Yoshinori Kitase stated that he and the rest of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s development team had already started drafting the third game’s story, though he also noted that they would wait to see players’ feedback for Rebirth and adjust the next sequel accordingly.

Aside from Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 featuring airship travel, there isn’t much information about the game, leaving it up to fans to draw their own theories about how Square Enix will wrap up its long-awaited retelling of the legendary Final Fantasy 7. It will likely be some time before this last chapter hits stores, but players will be able to get a better idea about where the road will end when Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches later this month.
