What Square Enix has Confirmed for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

All Confirmed Regions & Locations in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth So Far

Compared to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the sequel looks to be even bigger and packed with more content than before. In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Square Enix has confirmed that there will be new open world regions full of plenty of opportunities and fun activities waiting to be discovered by the player.

  • The Gold Saucer: A world-famous amusement park that is powered by Mako, the source of life on the planet. It has been confirmed that players will encounter a myriad of mini-games at the Gold Saucer.
  • Grasslands: A lush vibrant land, small outposts dotted around the landscape. The Grasslands appear to be a vast open world area where there is plenty for players to discover.
  • Junon: The second largest Shinra outpost. Junon used to be a beacon of hope until the Shinra Cooperation took over the city.
  • Under Junon: A once bustling port town that has fallen into decline and is now a desolate town full of displaced civilians.

There is another location called Costa del Sol, but its currently uncertain whether it is a location within one of the mentioned regions, or if its own region altogether. It could also be possible that there are more locations and regions for the player to explore, but players will likely have to wait until Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is released to find out if there are indeed more locations and regions.

All Confirmed Characters in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth So Far

Final Fantasy 7 has a myriad of characters, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is no different. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks to have doubled in size with its core cast of characters.

  • Cloud Strife: One of the titular protagonists of the Final Fantasy franchise. He was once a Shinra soldier but has since become a mercenary for hire.
  • Tifa Lockhart: Cloud Strife’s childhood friend. She was part of Barrett’s group within Avalanche.
  • Aerith Gainsborough: The last of the ancient race known as the Cetra. The Shinra cooperation has been after her all her life.
  • Barrett Wallace: A man who is passionate about protecting the planet. He’s the leader of a cell within the eco-terrorist group known as Avalance, and he’s Marlene’s adopted father.
  • Red XIII: A highly intelligent lion/wolf-like beast. He was held captive by Shinra until he was freed by Cloud and his friends.
  • Zack Fair: A former Shinra soldier and Cloud’s best friend. He is the protagonist of the prequel of Final Fantasy 7 known as Crisis Core.
  • Cait Sith: An unknown creature who originally worked as a fortune-teller at the Gold Saucer before he decided to join Cloud Strife in saving the world.
  • Yuffie Kisaragi: An energetic girl from Wutai. She is a cunning thief and a materia hunter.
  • Sephiroth: The primary antagonist of the original Final Fantasy 7. He is possibly one of the most well-known Final Fantasy antagonists. However, this time, the director of the game has referred to Sephiroth as a protagonist, which seems to point to him having a bigger role than just an antagonist.

There is even a myriad of supporting characters that have either been confirmed to appear in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or have appeared in trailers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Some of these characters previously appeared in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and others will be making their remake debut in the upcoming game.

  • Andrea Rhodea
  • Biggs
  • Bugenhagen
  • Cid Highwind
  • Dio
  • Dyne
  • Elena
  • Kyrie Canaan
  • Marlene Wallace
  • Reno
  • Rude

  • Vincent Valentine

There are many other supporting characters that could return to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. One such character that could appear is Jessie Rasberry, as in the final scenes of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, her gloves and bandanna were spotted on the table beside the bed that Biggs was recovering in. She hasn’t appeared in any trailers so far, nor has there been any confirmation about whether she will appear in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, so fans will just have to wait and see if she'll make a comeback.

What Square Enix has Revealed About the Story of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a continuation of its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Square Enix has revealed that the story will focus on Cloud and his friend as they journey across the land to find a way to save the planet and defeat Sephiroth. It has been confirmed that there will be some deviations from the original Final Fantasy 7 plot, such as Biggs surviving the events of Sector 7 whereas in the original, he did not. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Confirmed Platforms and Release Date

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will release on the following platforms in 2024:

  • PlayStation 5 – February 29th 2024
  • PC – Sometime after May 29th 2024

It was confirmed in PlayStations’ State of Play in September 2023 that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would be a timed exclusive for at least 3 months until it is released on PC. It is very unlikely that there will be any more delays, considering that the game has already received a delay in 2023. It will also be unlikely that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will release on Xbox consoles, as its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, was not released on Xbox consoles. However, that doesn't mean that the game will never release on other platforms such as Xbox.

Gameplay Features That Square Enix Has Confirmed for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

All Confirmed Mini Games in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth So Far

The upcoming game has announced a myriad of mini-games that players will be able to enjoy. From various racing games to musical rhythm games, as well as many others, it certainly looks like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will have a mini-game for just about any kind of player.

  • G-Bike: A racing mini-game that looks to be similar to the racing segments in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
  • Chocobo Races: A racing mini-game that looks to be taking inspiration from Super Mario Kart with its art and UI style.
  • 3D Brawler: A battle mini-game where players take control of small 3D characters that seem to look like up-to-date versions of the original Final Fantasy 7 models.
  • Piano Performance: According to Square Enix, there will be song sheets that can be collected and played on a piano, with some sheets being more difficult to play than others.
  • Queen’s Blood: A strategic card game where the aim is to overpower the opponent by accumulating power by placing cards into lanes on the game board. Players can collect cards and build their deck, but it is uncertain if these cards are collectibles or not, so fans will have to find out when the game releases.
  • Moogle Mischief: A mini-game where the aim is to bring back Moogle children to their homes, known as Mogstools. However, these mischievous children will attack the player in every possible way that they can.

All Confirmed Methods of Travel in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth So Far

As opposed to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Square Enix has confirmed various methods of traversal through its open world. Without much surprise, players can expect to find Chocobos to aid them on their adventures. As well as the standard Chocobo being confirmed to appear, there are other types of Chocobos that can aid in travel:

  • Mountain Chocobos: These Chocobos have mighty talons that allow them to climb up and down slopes that have special markings on them.
  • Sky Chocobos: These special Chocobos have the ability to take flight and glide across the landscape.

There are other methods of traversal that have been confirmed to appear in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and some of them look to be quite interesting modes of transport.

  • Buggy Cars: An alternative to traversing the land on a Chocobo. These cars will be able to navigate certain areas better and are faster than a Chocobo.
  • Wheelies: So far, it seems that this two-wheeled self-balancing vehicle is only available in the seaside port of Costa del Sol, and it will allow the player to navigate the town quicker than on foot.

All Confirmed Battle System Features in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth So Far

The battle mode in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems a lot more comprehensive than its predecessor, with both new and returning features to look forward to. From returning features such as tactical mode to equipping Materia, limit breaks and summons, to a new feature known as synergy attacks.

  • Tactical Mode: A mode that slows down time to allow the player to strategize.
  • Materia: A type of enchantment that can be equipped on outfits and weapons to give advantages, spells, and summons in battle.
  • Limit Breaks: A devastating ability that charges up when the player defeats or staggers foes,
  • Summons: A specific Materia that, if equipped, grants the user the ability to summon a god to aid them in battle.
  • Synergy: An ability that was introduced in Final Fantasy 7 INTERmission which allows party members to team up to gain access to various unique abilities that are exclusive to certain pairings.

Everything Confirmed About Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Open World So Far

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems to be taking inspiration from Final Fantasy 15 with its open world. It’s been said that the game will have a fully open world, but that the game will lock specific areas until the player advances. This could be related to the story and as the player advances through the story, more regions will unlock for the player to explore. So far, a fast travel system has been confirmed alongside a myriad of open world activities which include:

  • Remnawave Towers: Activating these towers will open new opportunities within the region, such as Research Assignments. As well as unlocking new opportunities, these towers will also uncover areas within the map, like Far Cry’s radio towers.
  • Combat Assignments: Like Chadley’s research assignments in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, these combat assignments have a similar premise and unlock new challenges in Chadley’s combat simulator.
  • Excavation Sites: When the player's Chocobo is near buried treasure, the game will indicate with a “?” above the Chocobo’s head and the player must follow the directions their loyal bird gives them to find the treasure.
  • Chocobo Stops: Repairing these stops turns them into a fast travel point, which is very handy in an open world game.

A big difference between the new Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and its predecessor is the scale of the world. Final Fantasy 7 Remake had a linear world and there were only the occasional areas that players could explore, such as Secter 6, Secter 5 Slums, and the Sector 7 Slums, but unlike its successor, those areas were still small. One thing is for certain: fans of open world and Final Fantasy games are in for a treat if Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s open world lives up to Square Enix’s word.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Could Release With Minor DLC

Most modern Final Fantasy games are released with a selection of minor DLC that players can download for free that will help aid them in combat or provide new collectibles and outfits. Considering that Final Fantasy 7 Remake came with a variety of minor DLC, it seems almost certain its successor will also be released with various minor DLC. This DLC will likely be released as an item pack that could include a myriad of items such as accessories and new exclusive summons.

Square Enix Could Reveal a Major DLC Near The End of 2024

Considering that Square Enix released a major expansion for Final Fantasy 7 Remake about 9 months after its initial release, as well as every modern Final Fantasy game being given major expansions, most recently Final Fantasy 16, it would be likely that down the line, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be given a major expansion. The expansion might link into the 3rd game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.

Since Final Fantasy 7 INTERmission focused on Yuffie, then perhaps an expansion for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will focus on one of the companions in the original Final Fantasy 7 that have yet to become playable characters in the remake series. As of now, the only two from the originals that have not been confirmed to be playable characters are Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine. If Square Enix is planning an expansion, it could likely be revealed around November to December 2024. It could possibly even be announced at The Game Awards like Final Fantasy 16’s expansion was. Nevertheless, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looks to be a great game and has already received some accolades and awards for being the most anticipated release of 2024.
