Highlights

  • Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, and Healing Materia are crucial for exploiting enemies' weaknesses in battle.
  • Elemental Materia can turn any weapon into an elemental powerhouse for both offense and defense.
  • Assess Materia scans enemies for HP and weaknesses, useful for strategizing in boss fights and World Intel Quests.

Materia is one of the most interesting magic systems in the series. It is the biggest gameplay mechanic that has carried over from Final Fantasy 7. It did not change on how it was used in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its usage hasn't changed in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Players can buy or acquire Materia through side quests, and there are five types in all: Magic, Support, Complete, Summon, and Command.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Beginner Tips

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can be confusing for new players. In this guide, they will find useful tips that will help them in their adventure.

They can all be useful in battle from elemental Materia, which can cast spells like Fire to Complete Materia to boost stats like HP. It’s a lot to take in for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth novices, but thankfully, there is a guide. From Kalm to Junon, these are the best Materia players should focus on acquiring and leveling up as soon as possible.

9 The Five Basic Magic Materia

Fire/Ice/Lightning/Wind/Healing Materia (Available In Shops Starting In Kalm)

Fire Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Players can’t go wrong in mastering five of the most basic Materia in the game including Fire Materia Ice Materia, Lightning Materia, and Wind Materia. Those are all elemental-based Materia which can be used to exploit enemy weaknesses in battle like by using Aero. The fifth notable Materia is called Healing Materia, and it can create spells like Cure to heal the party. The nice thing about all five of these Materia pieces is that the party begins with them all plus duplicates can be purchased at shops starting in Kalm which is in Chapter 2 of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

8 Fire And Ice Materia

Purchase From Chadley

Fire And Ice Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Fire and Ice Materia feels like a carryover from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 which allowed players to fuse Materia in a variety of odd combos. It can be purchased from Chadley in the Grasslands area of the game once players get enough points from World Intel side quests. The nice thing about this Materia, besides saving a slot on armor or a weapon, is that Ice and Fire spells also come with status effects. Ice can freeze enemies, for example, which makes sense from a logical standpoint. Lightning and Wind Materia is another combo from Chadley, but that’s in his Junon shop.

7 Elemental Materia

Obtained Through Battle Intel: Conqueror of the Skies

Elemental Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Elemental Materia can turn any weapon into an elemental nightmare for enemies. For example, combining Elemental Materia and Ice Materia on one of Tifa’s gloves will make her hits strike with Ice power. This is great against enemies weak to Ice but bad for enemies that can absorb Ice attacks. Elemental Materia can also absorb that attached element’s power for heroes, so it is both an offensive and defensive Materia which can be acquired through one of Chadley’s simulation courses, Battle Intel: Conqueror of the Skies.

6 Magic Efficiency Materia

Purchase From Chadley

Magic Efficiency Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Magic Efficiency Materia can be purchased from Chadley too but in the Junon region. This is a great one to level up fast because it will reduce the linked Materia’s MP cost like the aforementioned Fire and Ice Materia. Creating combos like this for the party will be the key to victory concerning Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Chapter List (All FF7 Rebirth Chapters)

Understanding how many chapters there are in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can make it a lot easier to gauge how much progress one's made.

This will allow players to use more magic in battle as stat numbers can be low toward the start of the game, unlike HP, which is genuinely high. It can be a pain to use items like Ethers in battle, too.

5 Assess Materia

Cloud Starts With It

Assess Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

The Assess Materia used to be called Sense in the PS1 version of Final Fantasy 7. It allowed players to scan enemies for HP and weaknesses, which could be especially helpful during boss fights. The Assess Materia works virtually the same, except that once leveled up, it can scan all enemies on screen. Plus, every enemy that is scanned can be accessed during battle with the PS5’s touchpad. This Materia can help a lot with Chadley’s World Intel Quests, and Cloud begins with it.

4 Prayer Materia

Aerith Starts With It

Prayer Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

This Command Materia is in Aerith’s possession at the start, which makes sense. The Prayer Materia can heal all party members in battle although only for a little amount until it gets leveled up. Still, it’s good in the early game because players can’t get Magnify Materia until Chapter 9, when Cait Sith joins the crew. Magnify Materia can make any spell target multiple allies or foes in battle. So, a good combo for this would be Magnify Materia plus Healing Materia, but that is a tip for another day.

3 Enemy Skill Materia

Obtained Through Biological Intel: Know Thine Enemy

Enemy Skill Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Enemy Skill Materia was like the Blue Mage equivalent in Final Fantasy 7. In the original version, players could learn specific enemy attacks if they were attacked and equipped with this Materia. In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, players will need to learn enemy attacks through Chadley’s simulator. This is also how they will gain the Materia in the first place via the mission, Biological Intel: Know Thine Enemy. Unlike other iterations, this version of Enemy Skill Materia will boost stats upon leveling up like increasing HP.

2 HP Up Materia

Obtained Through Combat Training: Beginner’s Hall

HP Up Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Speaking of increasing HP through Enemy Skill Materia, HP Up Materia will do that too but better. Every level will increase the percentage of HP for a character, and it takes a long time to max out at five stars.

Every Side Quest in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

There are 36 side quests in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, though not all of them will be available to players right away.

The first taste can be achieved through Chadley’s Combat Training: Beginner’s Hall mission but HP Up Materia will become available in shops eventually. MP Up Materia is the rarer of the two in the early game, which should also be leveled up as soon as possible to allow characters to cast more spells in battle.

1 First Strike Materia

Obtained Through Grasslands Battle Intel: Horror on the Range

First Strike Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

First Strike Materia will fill up the ATB gauge for a character at the start of battle. Normally, the ATB gauge increases as players attack enemies. Starting with a bit filled, or a whole bar completely, will allow players to get the edge one enemies. For example, using Assess at the start on a new enemy or boss can make all the difference. The first available piece can be found via the mission, Grasslands Battle Intel: Horror on the Range.
