There are quite a few swords for players to find in Final Fantasy 16. Although Clive is more than capable of slashing through his enemies will almost any blade, as players progress they'll notice it gets significantly more difficult to damage and stagger certain enemies. Some of the later encounters can be particularly punishing, so players will want to arm Clive with the best possible weapon heading into the endgame.

There is one sword that stands above all the rest in the first playthrough of Final Fantasy 16 and it's so powerful it comes with its own achievement. Anyone who wants to earn all possible trophies in this epic adventure and dish out as much damage as possible outside of Final Fantasy Mode will need to get their hands on the Gotterdammerung and the Half Past Twilight achievement that comes with it. Here's how to unlock the Gotterdammerung in Final Fantasy 16.

Prerequisites For The Gotterdammerung In Final Fantasy 16

Before players can actually snag the Gotterdammerung for themselves, they'll need to ensure they have some prerequisites done first. This is because gamers can only access the Gotterdammerung blueprints after completing the Blacksmith Blues IV sidequest later on in Clive's adventure. Unfortunately, access to Blacksmith Blues IV is only possible after completing the other three sidequests. Here's a look at when each one of these sidequests becomes available and how players can start them:

Quest Name

When It's Available

How To Start It

Blacksmith Blues

Here Be Monsters (25th Main Story Quest)

Speak to Blackthorne the Blacksmith at the Hideaway

Blacksmith Blues II

Out Of Shadow (32nd Main Story Quest)

Access the Letter From Gav at the Reading Table in Clive's Room at the Hideaway

Blacksmith Blues III

A Song Of Hope (38th Main Story Quest)

Speak to August in The Mess area of the Hideaway

Blacksmith Blues IV

Across the Narrow (41st Main Story Quest)

Speak to August in The Mess area of the Hideaway

Once players have completed all of the previous side quests and made it to Across the Narrow in the Main Storyline, they'll be able to access Blacksmith Blues IV. Completing the sidequest will reward them with the Gotterdammerung Design Draft, as well as the Ragnarok sword, which is required to complete the recipe.

Obtaining the Gotterdammerung Design Draft is only part of the journey towards unlocking the Gotterdammerung and completing the Half Past Twilight Trophy. Players will also need to get their hands on the appropriate materials and it requires taking down some of the toughest enemies in the entire game. Here's a look at the recipe for the Gotterdammerung:

Gotterdammerung

  • Ragnarok Sword
  • 3 x Orichalcum
  • 2 x Darksteel
  • 1 x Primitive Battlehorn

Players will already have the Ragnarok sword for completing Blacksmith Blues IV so they can check that off their list. Next, they'll need to snag at least three pieces of Orichalcum. This rare material is only rewarded for defeating certain notorious marks, including:

Each of these notorious marks will drop one Orichalcum, so players will need to defeat at least three of them to get the necessary amount. From there, it's onto the Darksteel, which also comes from two particular Notorious Marks that can only be accessed via hunting. Players will be able to grab Darksteel from:

With the two Darksteel in hand, players just need the Primitive Battlehorn. This particular item only comes from one source and it's, unfortunately, another Notorious Mark. The Primitive Battlehorn can be grabbed from the Gobermouch.

Once players have access to every material, they simply need to return to Blackthorne in the Hideaway and craft the Gotterdammerung, giving them the Half Past Twilight trophy and awarding Clive with the best sword in the first playthrough (outside of Final Fantasy mode).
