The way Final Fantasy 16 changes how combat is viewed in the JRPG series is definitely something of a step in a different direction, but for those that are able to grasp the intricacies, it is also a combat system that delivers satisfying fights almost all the times. It doesn't matter whether it is going up against humanoid foes or magical creatures, controlling Clive Rosfield in battle makes for a fun time.

That enjoyment gets even more when the game decides to throw an even bigger foe into the picture, such as when Eikons face off against each other. Following the titanic battle against Akashic Dragon, players will find themselves up against Typhon in Final Fantasy 16, a familiar name to longtime fans, and this is also going to be one hell of a bout.

How to Beat Typhon in Final Fantasy 16

This fight comes at the conclusion of Clive's adventures at Drake's Head, so be sure to heal up and pick up the potions lying around in the area to stock up before the fight begins. Proceed further, and watch in awe as Ramuh demonstrates its power by impaling the emerging Typhon. Unfortunately, the proceedings have only just begun.

First Phase

At the start of this battle, Typhon will be sitting things out to recover from Ramuh's attack. Instead, Clive will have to deal with waves of Akashic enemies. Be sure to always prioritize Specters first to eliminate any ranged disturbances, before eliminating the Revenants and Wraiths.

Typhon will rouse eventually, and it is time for Ifrit to take over the battle. Unlike the Garuda fight, Ifrit is much more agile this time around, capable of quick bursts across the battlefield and can count on the new Backdraft move to deal more damage. That will come in handy with regard to Typhon's attacks:

  • Watch out for several melee attacks using its arms. Typhon has obvious windup animations when it comes to slams, swipes, or lunges. Dodge all of these attacks and counterattack with combos like Backdraft.
  • At range, Typhon uses an ability called Unending Clamor, which focuses on Ifrit's location for an AoE explosion. Sprint out of the area towards Typhon to punish it for even trying.

  • The boss is also capable of firing off magical projectiles at Ifrit, which can be easily dodged or negated by the Eikon's own fireballs.
  • As its health gets reduced further, Typhon will use more ranged attacks with spinning lasers and sustained bursts of projectiles. All are quite clearly telegraphed, so time those dodges and get in close to attack.

Once Typhon has been Staggered, the fight will move on into the next stage.

Second Phase

This is where Typhon the Transgressor makes its appearance, sporting one more pair of arms and a snazzy hairdo to boot. The enhanced version of Typhon is more of a threat, with many of its attacks now getting more dangerous and extended. Unending Clamor, for example, now comes in multiples, so watch out.

In addition to his previous attacks, Typhon the Transgressor will also:

  • Utilize Demon Wall, which teleports Typhon far from Ifrit, and send damaging magical walls toward the player. Find the gap and stay there to avoid damage, and repeat the process until the attack is done.

  • Watch out for Catacecaumene as well, where Typhon shoots out lasers in random directions that go towards Ifrit. It will likely combine this attack with Unending Clamor, so it is key to be alert to avoid these attacks.
  • Typhon also uses a new ranged attack where it charges up a laser before firing off a blast. Get out of the way once the charging is done and close the gap.

In between these attacks, it is essential to get close and use all of Ifrit's moves and combos to do signficant damage. The lack of Eikonic Abilities is counteracted by the sheer power of the Eikon, and once Typhon's health is down to a small portion, expect to engage in some QTEs with a sequence of Cinematic Clash, Evasion, and one more Clash to finish things off.

Beating Typhon the Transgressor will reward players with 870 XP, 200 Ability Points, and 3500 Gil. The accessory, The Breath of Fire, will also drop alongside crafting materials.

Final Fantasy 16 is exclusively available for PlayStation 5.
