Not too long after hinting at a possible DLC for Final Fantasy 16, producer Naoki Yoshida suggests that it might be centered around one of the game’s most popular supporting characters: Cid. The latest installment in the iconic Final Fantasy series has been met with mostly positive reception thanks in part to its gripping and detailed mythos, which some feel is ripe for further expansion through DLC. In Final Fantasy 16, Clive Rosfield seeks to liberate the land of Valisthea from the sinister forces that control it, with his story being told throughout three different time periods.

These time skips leave the door open to explore more of Clive’s life in a DLC story campaign, and the various allies and enemies he meets along his path of vengeance and redemption are just as viable for such post-launch content in the eyes of many fans. However, Square Enix has gone back and forth about whether Final Fantasy 16 will get any DLC. While the publisher previously stated that it has no plans for any further expansions to the main game, producer Naoki Yoshida recently suggested that Final Fantasy 16 DLC could be on the horizon thanks to the wave of positive fan feedback his team has received.

Now Yoshida is hinting at which of Final Fantasy 16’s cast of rogues and anti-heroes could star in this hypothetical DLC, and his choice of Cid would likely be well-received by fans. In a recent interview with Kakuchopurei, Yoshida revealed that he would like to make a DLC story revolving around this outlaw. Yoshida says that Cid would be a great choice for a side plot due to his complex and mostly mysterious backstory, though he notes that this is just a personal preference and not necessarily what Creative Business Unit 3 is planning for the future of Final Fantasy 16, if anything at all.

Many Final Fantasy characters have bore the name Cid throughout the series, and Final Fantasy 16’s iteration has already become one of the most popular to date. A former soldier turned revolutionary leader, Cid is the Dominant of the thunder Eikon Ramuh and seeks to free the kingdoms of Valisthea - a cause that Clive and his friends take up as Final Fantasy 16’s plot carries on. Along the way, Cid broke traditional Final Fantasy conventions and won over players with his noble goals, charming and sarcastic personality, and strong voice acting from Game of Thrones and Harry Potter alumni Ralph Ineson.

One complaint many players had with Final Fantasy 16’s plot is how little time they actually got to spend with Cid - a slight that could be corrected with DLC if Naoki Yoshida gets his way. Cid’s largely unexplored backstory is ripe for further exploration, including his time in the Royal Waloeder Army and his complicated relationship with Final Fantasy 16 antagonist Benedikta Harman. All of this and more could be the focus of Final Fantasy 16’s first DLC, and few fans would complain about seeing more of Cid in action.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively on PS5.
