Darksteel is a material in Final Fantasy 16 that is used in the crafting of Gotterdammerung, the strongest weapon that players can obtain during a first playthrough. This utility makes Darksteel extremely valuable, and fans will need two of them if they hope to create that powerful sword. Fortunately, it is not extremely difficult to get Darksteel in Final Fantasy 16, provided that the player knows where to look for it.

Final Fantasy 16: Darksteel Locations

Players can obtain the Darksteel that they need to craft FF16's Gotterdammerung by slaying two Notorious Marks. More specifically, fans must dispatch Thanatos and the Prince of Death, and here are details on their respective hunts:

Thanatos

ff16-hunt-map-thanatos
  • Hunt: Usher to the Underworld
  • Rank: A
  • Level: 42
  • Prerequisite: Complete Brotherhood main quest.
  • Location: Titan's Wake (West of the Gilded Path obelisk)

Prince of Death

Where to Find the Grim Reaper, Prince of Death, in Final Fantasy 16
  • Hunt: The Grim Reaper
  • Rank: A
  • Level: 40
  • Prerequisite: Complete Under New Management I & II side quests. Speak with Jill at beginning of Back to Their Origin main quest.
  • Location: Cape Orsiere (Northwest of Northreach obelisk)

With respect to the item that players can craft with the Darksteel that they receive from these monsters, the Gotterdammerung has 375 Attack and 375 Stagger. While those stats cannot be increased through reinforcement, this is still the most powerful weapon that fans will have access to prior to an NG+ playthrough. Additionally, there is a trophy to be claimed by crafting the Gotterdammerung, providing some additional incentive for fans to pursue this endeavor.

Final Fantasy 16 The Grim Reaper Hunt Location (How to Find & Beat Prince of Death)

To note, Darksteel is not the only reward that players will receive for defeating Thanatos and the Prince of Death, as their associated hunts also award Gil and Renown when they are completed. Furthermore, fans will earn some EXP and Ability Points for slaying these monsters. While these rewards are certainly not as hard to come by as Darksteel, they will be appreciated by some players nonetheless.

Indeed, fans that want to master all the Abilities and take Clive to max level in Final Fantasy 16 will not turn up their noses at any opportunities to earn EXP and Ability Points, especially if those opportunities come while making other forms of progress. That said, players can certainly complete the game without ever hitting those marks if they have sufficient prowess in combat. Still, maxing out Clive can be a fun goal to target, and the hunts detailed in this guide will push fans ever closer to it.

Final Fantasy 16 is available for the PS5.
