Final Fantasy 16 features a number of sidequests that players can take on as they progress through the main story, despite being somewhat linear compared to other entries in the series. These quests often have Clive discovering the many troubles of the realm and doing what he can to remedy some of them.

One Side Quest in Final Fantasy 16 is "Cut From the Cloth" and has Clive setting out from the Hideout on a fairly routine errand that quickly goes off the rails. This quest has players heading out to get some bolts of cloth so that some recently freed Branded can get new clothes.

Updated on 07/10/2023 by Thomas Hawkins:After further investigation, it has been found that the choice made at the end of this Side Quest does indeed affect a late-game event that can be easily missed. This article has been updated to account for, and explain in detail, this impact.

Cut From The Cloth Side Quest Walkthrough in Final Fantasy 16

This quest begins at the Hideaway after Clive and Jill's visit to Drake's Breath, by visiting Hortense near where Clive appears after fast traveling to the Hideaway. They explain that they've ordered two bolts of cloth, one red and one blue, and that they need someone without a brand to go and collect the order.

These are to make clothes for a pair of Branded who were recently freed and are dressed only in rags, who can be found nearby. Clive will need to head for Northreach and speak to the Draper just outside the main gate to collect the order. Unfortunately for Clive, the order has been delayed as the wagon delivering the goods hasn't arrived yet, so it's time for a trip down the road to search for it.

After heading down the road in search of the cart, Clive will find the cart and its owner being accosted by a man who is clearly a bandit. He calls for backup once the cart's owner asks Clive for help, causing a large axe-wielding bandit, who he calls "Killer," to emerge from the brush nearby.

Killer fights similarly to most other heavy axe-wielding enemies in the game, using overhead swings and horizontal spins with long windup times. Players should take advantage of this and time their dodges, chipping away at Killer until he is staggered and then unleashing Eikonic attacks to burn through his HP. Using Garuda's Deadly Embrace to topple Killer when his will is half-depleted is a great way to open him up for extra attacks too.

With Killer defeated and the other bandit fleeing, Clive and the merchant can return to the Draper to collect the order. The Draper throws in some extra choice cuts as thanks, and Clive can now head back to the Hideaway to report in.

Cut From The Cloth Choices (Black Linen, White Silk, or Lush Velvet)

After handing in the Cloth, Hortense at the Hideaway will ask Clive about the extra materials and, after learning the story, asks which Clive likes best. The choices are as follows:

  • Black Embroidered Linen
  • White Continental Silk
  • Lush Red Velvet

The choice made here has an effect on dialog and the item received during a conversation with Jill that becomes available shortly before the final quest of the main story.

Spoilers for Events Accessible after completing the Side Quest "Priceless"

Speaking to Jill on the balcony next to Clive's Quarters after completing the Side Quest "Priceless" (which becomes available after "Cut From the Cloth" and "Where There's a Will" are completed) will allow players to trigger a scene where she explains a tradition of giving a ribbon to a knight before they leave for war as a good luck charm.

She explains that she still wears her ribbon, and so she made Clive something to take with him in its place. Using the material chosen during "Cut From the Cloth," Jill has created a handkerchief for Clive, which is added to the inventory.

This item is classed as a Curio but does not appear among the other Curios in Clive's room (likely due to him carrying it with him) and can instead be viewed only on the inventory screen. The icon for the item reflects which fabric is used though it is frustratingly small which makes it hard to examine.

Final Fantasy 16 is available for PS5.
