The release of Final Fantasy 14's Patch 6.45 heralded an assortment of updates to the game’s quirky Blue Mage job, including new spells, quests, and an increase to its level cap. Blue Mages gain spells by conquering specific foes in encounters across the game, a mechanism that harks back to notable Blue Mages of prior Final Fantasy games.

Patch 6.45 introduced 20 new spells for Blue Mages to discover, increasing the total number of spells the job can learn to a whopping 124, though they can equip only 24 at any given time. Blue Mage players must determine the best choices from their available spells and abilities in order to defeat unique solo content including the challenging Masked Carnivale. This guide teaches Blue Mages how to learn Schiltron, a potent new counterattack ability, in Final Fantasy 14.

How to Learn Schiltron in Final Fantasy 14

Blue Mage action learned in Final Fantasy XIV.

Schiltron is a fresh addition to the Blue Mage's tanking arsenal in Patch 6.45. The one-star spell grants the Blue Mage the ability to automatically counterattack every time an enemy inflicts physical damage. The potency of this ability is greatly increased when the Blue Mage is under the effects of Aetheric Mimicry: Tank, making it an excellent ability for generating enmity.

Schiltron is spell #107 of 124 in the Blue Mage’s repertoire. Unlike many other Blue Mage spells, which often require completing quests or besting enemies in more challenging encounters, Schiltron can be unlocked by defeating a fairly simple overworld foe: the Long-Tailed Armadillo, a newly added enemy. These Beastkin creatures can be found at the southernmost part of Amh Araeng, a vast desert region in Norvrandt, in The Southern Hills of Amber.

Players must learn Schiltron before they can proceed in the new Blue Mage quest series added in 6.45.

Where to Find Long-Tailed Armadillo

Long Tailed Armadillo location in Final Fantasy XIV.

To reach Amh Araeng and The Southern Hills of Amber to find Long-Tailed Armadillos, the quickest route involves teleporting to the Aetheryte at Twine and heading directly south.

The player will eventually reach Ladle, a location players may remember from the Shadowbringers’ Main Story Quest, “The Trolley Problem.” Here, several Long-Tailed Armadillos can be found around coordinates (X: 15.2, Y: 30.8, Z: 0.5). The aggressive Long-Tailed Armadillos are level 77 and may pose a threat to lower-level Blue Mages, who might find it helpful to bring some allies to defeat these creatures.

It should be noted that for a Blue Mage to gain a spell from a creature, the creature must use the spell at least oncebefore being defeated. Therefore, the player will have to wait for the Long-Tailed Armadillo to cast Schiltron at least one time before defeating the monster to ensure they will learn the spell. The enemy will use Schiltron when it is at low health.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
