Typically, the series of main story quests involved with a new content patch in Final Fantasy 14 will culminate in a trial that players have to beat in order to complete the story. While there are exceptions to this, both patch 6.2 and 6.3 ended the storyline with a trial.

Trials are 8-player duties in Final Fantasy 14 that are standalone boss encounters as opposed to raids which involve a series of bosses and a unique storyline. Efforts to rescue Azdaja grind to a halt as players have to deal with a powerful enemy in the Mount Ordeals trial. Here is how to beat Mount Ordeals.

This guide contains spoilers, so players should proceed with caution if they want to go into this trial with no knowledge of the mechanics.

How to Unlock Mount Ordeals

Just like with the new dungeon added in 6.3, Mount Ordeals can only be unlocked by progressing through the story. In fact, this trial unlocks soon after beating Lapis Manalis. Final Fantasy 14 players will have to complete a couple of quests, but it won't take more than thirty minutes to reach the point where Mount Ordeals unlocks.

How to Beat Rubicante

Players familiar with Final Fantasy 4 may recognize the boss that they fight in the new Mount Ordeals trial. At the start of the fight, Rubicante will cast Inferno which does a large amount of damage to all players. This AoE attack cannot be avoided, so players must heal up and move on. Shortly after casting Inferno, Rubicante will unleash his main mechanic which is an ability called Ordeal of Purgation.

This attack unleashes a complex looking glyph onto the ground. A series of blue lines will appear that connect to blue circles outside the arena. One of the blue lines will start glowing orange, indicating which blue circle will unleash a large AoE attack. During this time, players get a buff called Penance. When this buff expires, players are frozen in place. As a result, it is important for players to position themselves so that they don't get stuck in the AoE field. Simply stand to the right or left of the orange line to avoid taking damage.

This mechanic changes later on in the fight and the blue line that is in the purple circle will rotate in the direction indicated by arrows. Pay close attention to where the line gets moved to, as this can drastically change where it is safe to stand versus where it is not.

Another big attack to watch out for is Arch Inferno. When this ability is cast, Final Fantasy 14 players will see a series of AoE fields spawn that will begin slowly rotating across the arena. Keep moving to avoid getting hit, as there are a lot of AoE fields spawning.

Just before the start of phase two, Rubicante will spawn a bunch of adds that players will need to kill as quickly as possible. During this time, a power gauge appears on the screen and if players don't kill all the adds by the time the gauge reaches 100, they will wipe and have to start the fight all over again. Once all the adds are dead and players heal up from the attack, phase two of this fight will begin.

Rubicante - Phase Two

There will be a brief cutscene as Rubicante changes form. While the boss will look a little different, and he gains a few new abilities, the fight doesn't change much. The main thing to watch out for during this next phase is the Flamerake ability. Two arrows will spin in a circle under the boss and then stop after a few seconds. This is the direction that the boss will dash in and unleash a devastatingly powerful attack. Quickly move out of the AoE field but then move back to the center of the arena, as Rubicante will follow up with another AoE immediately outside where he first hit.

Rubicante will also unleash an ability called Soulscald. Players will be targeted by AoE fields that will follow their every move. All players should spread out to prevent having anyone in the group getting hit by two attacks. After the attack hits, prepare to move out of the blue lines that appear to avoid getting hit by the follow-up attack the boss unleashes. During phase two, Rubicante will also use a powerful tank buster called Dualfire that hits both tanks and creates a large AoE field on both players.

Finally, the last mechanic that players need to keep an eye out for is Sweeping Immolation. Half the arena will be covered in a large AoE field while all players need to spread out in the area that isn't hit by the AoE. If players can stay on top of these mechanics, they will have no trouble defeating Rubicante and completing the MSQ for Patch 6.3.
