PvP is not the main reason most people pick up Final Fantasy 14, but it's such a dramatic change of pace from the normal PvE content that it's one of the reasons many folks keep their subscriptions running during content lulls. In direct contrast with other battle modes in the game, PvP is not about rote memorization of mechanics or how effectively you can pull off your class' rotation. Here, adventurers need to understand how to use a unique toolkit to outsmart and out-DPS unpredictable and fierce opponents.

In Frontline, the 72-player PVP mode, three Grand Companies come together in an often chaotic, always exhilarating battle for kills and objectives. Since these modes use an entirely separate battle system from all other combat, it's a fresh way for players to let their skills shine. Each of the three modes offers its own challenges, and teams must decide whether they want to focus on objectives or simply steamroll the other teams with kills. The rewards for a match make it worth the time, with a stack of tomestones for endgame players and a great deal of experience for those who are still leveling a battle class.

All Three Frontline Modes, Explained

There are three different battle modes available in Frontlines:

  • Seal Rock (Seize) asks players to capture and defend nodes across the map.
  • The Fields of Glory (Shatter) awards points for destroying large and small icicles that activate every few minutes.
  • Onsal Hakair (Danshig Naadam) activates nodes that disappear once claimed.

A fourth mode — Secure - The Borderland Ruins — appears in the Duty Finder menu, but it is not currently playable. Since this is an older, less popular mode, it's likely to be revamped before returning in a future patch.

How To Queue For A Specific Frontline Mode

Unfortunately, there's no way to queue for a particular Frontline duty. Each day, the available Frontline mode changes. The switch happens at the same time that daily duty completion resets: 11:00 am, Eastern, 8:00 am Pacific.

How To Unlock Duty Challenge: Frontline

Players using the free trial aren't eligible to participate in PvP, so for some players, the first step to unlocking Frontline Roulette is to purchase a subscription.

Players with an active subscription will need to reach level 30 on any battle class. Upon reaching level 30, players should visit the Grand Company Lieutenant outside their Grand Company. The NPC will have the blue quest marker symbol over their head.

  • The Maelstrom NPC is Trachraet, who stands outside the Maelstom Command entrance in the Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X: 12.7, Y: 12.8).
  • The Twin Adders NPC is Scarlet, waiting next to the stairs leading to the Adders Nest in Old Gridania (X: 9.9, Y: 11.4).
  • The Immortal Flames NPC is Mimio Mio, located near a pillar in front of the Hall of Flames in Ul'dah, Steps of Nald (X: 8.6, Y: 9.4).

If this NPC does not have the quest available, players will need to retrace their steps through the Grand Company quest chain to find out where they left off.
