Highlights

  • Final Fantasy 14 collaborations with other games keep players engaged and excited in and out of Eorzea.
  • References to various Final Fantasy titles are scattered throughout Final Fantasy 14, from locations to boss designs.
  • Despite players eagerly anticipating a Final Fantasy 7 crossover, it may have to wait until the remake saga concludes.

Over the past decade, Final Fantasy 14 has played host to various collaborations with different games. From an entire alliance raid series dedicated to NieR: Automata to the latest crossover with Mountain Dew Gaming, Final Fantasy 14 collaborations have given players a reason to stay engaged both in and out of Eorzea.

Given the sheer number of titles in Square Enix's repertoire, Final Fantasy 14 has included references to other games in the Final Fantasy franchise. While some references can be as subtle as a location's name, other references such as glamours and boss designs are more obvious on the face. During the latter patches of Endwalker's main story, Final Fantasy 4 fans were treated to several Trial battles against Golbez, Zeromus, and the Archfiends. However, some Final Fantasy crossovers were made available periodically, with the Final Fantasy 16 event ending after just over one month of availability. While the FF16 event could return to Final Fantasy 14 at any point, there is one outstanding Final Fantasy title that fans have been anticipating for years.

The fifth expansion for Final Fantasy 14, Dawntrail will be packed with features, including the game's first big graphical update since its relaunch.

A Final Fantasy 14 x Final Fantasy 7 Remake Crossover Is Inevitable But Distant

Of all the games in the franchise that have not yet crossed over with Final Fantasy 14, the most highly-anticipated crossover is with Final Fantasy 7. While the original release goes back to 1997, the year 2020 gave fans the first entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga. In addition to references from the original release, Final Fantasy 7 Remake gave a new generation of fans a glimpse into the characters and moments that defined the franchise. However, FF7 Remake, and its sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, are just two chapters of a planned trilogy. Final Fantasy 7 Remake's third chapter remains unnamed and unreleased at the time of writing.

Ergo, any collaboration with Final Fantasy 14 will likely have to wait until the saga concludes. Despite the wait, that has not stopped Creative Studio 3 from including references to Final Fantasy 7 through Final Fantasy 14. As one of the Veteran rewards for being subscribed to Final Fantasy 14, players can obtain a glamour of Cloud's clothing called the Strife Attire, based on his appearance in the film Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. Cloud's iconic hairstyle is also obtainable periodically via contests on social media. The incorporation of Materia into Final Fantasy 14 is also directly derived from FF7. In both iterations of the Materia system, players can add additional power to their weapons and armor to give them an edge in battle.

Final Fantasy 7's Most Powerful Foes Are Already In Final Fantasy 14

Aside from glamours and materia, some iconic entities and enemies from FF7 have already made their way into Final Fantasy 14 as challenges players can face. In the Shadowbringers expansion, the Sorrow of Werlyt trial series saw the Warrior of Light team up with their old enemy, Gaius Baelsar, to confront the war machines known as the Ruby Weapon, the Emerald Weapon, and the Diamond Weapon in a trilogy of 8-player battles. The Ruby Weapon and the Emerald Weapon were notoriously difficult super bosses in the original FF7. In Heavensward, players confronted Eorzea's version of the Knights of the Round, one of the most popular Summons in Final Fantasy 7. Only time will tell how each will be incorporated into the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake game.

As Final Fantasy 14 prepares to launch the Dawntrail expansion, Creative Studio 3 has already revealed that a crossover with Final Fantasy 11 via the Echoes of Vana'diel alliance raid is next on its docket. Although Final Fantasy 14 has remained open to referencing and crossing over with other entries, it remains anyone's guess as to how a potential Final Fantasy 7 Remake event would play out.
