Highlights

  • Final Fantasy 14's Patch 6.5 update, called "Growing Light," will be released in two parts, with the first part coming in early October 2023.
  • It will include a new main story dungeon and trial that fans of Final Fantasy 4 will recognize.

Final Fantasy 14 kicked off the second day of the 2023 Las Vegas Fan Fest by revealing a small taste of what players can expect in the Patch 6.5 content update. The final major update for Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker will be split into two parts, and game producer and director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida explained what players can expect to see in each half of the update.

The first day of the North American Fan Fest was dominated by the hype surrounding the reveal of Final Fantasy 14's fifth expansion, Dawntrail. With a new continent of Tural and two new Jobs, Dawntrail was marketed as a journey of discovery for the Warrior of Light and the Scions. While plenty of new forms of content will be added in the coming months, Yoshida disappointed Final Fantasy fans by declining to add the Blitzball mini-game to Final Fantasy 14. That aside, the upcoming slate of updates will have plenty for players to experience soon.

Final Fantasy 14's Patch 6.5 update will be called "Growing Light" and split into two parts. The first part will be released in early October 2023, which will include a new main story dungeon and trial that Final Fantasy 4 fans will recognize. The current main story plot will take players back to the Thirteenth Shard as they dive into The Lunar Subterrane dungeon, which shares a name with the final dungeon of Final Fantasy 4. After clearing the dungeon, the Warrior of Light will face Zeromus, one of the most recognizable villains in Final Fantasy history, in the Abyssal Fracture trial.

Yoshida also revealed that the final Alliance Raid of the Myths of the Realm series, Thaleia, would be included in Patch 6.5. In addition, the free trial of Final Fantasy 14 would be expanded to include the Stormblood expansion once the 6.5 content update arrives. This will also add Stormblood's final three dungeons to the Duty Support system, which will allow free trial players to experience plenty of main story content for free. Only time will tell if the expanded free trial will also include access to optional Stormblood content such as the Unending Coils of Bahamut (Ultimate) raid and The Great Hunt trial that was featured as a crossover with Monster Hunter: World.

However, Final Fantasy 14 players will have to wait until Patch 6.55 for the conclusion of the main story of Growing Light, as well as content such as relic upgrades and the Fall Guys crossover in the Gold Saucer. Between the 6.5 patch series and the upcoming Dawntrail expansion, Final Fantasy 14 players will have a plethora of content to do soon.

Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S version launching in Spring 2024.
