July 19, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy 10, the franchise's debut on PS2 and a game considered by many to be one of the best Final Fantasy titles ever made. Many fans are celebrating Final Fantasy 10's anniversary through art and cosplay, including harumiminiru and bruccellati. The duo recently took to Reddit to show off their cosplay of popular Final Fantasy 10 characters Yuna and Rikku, based on how the characters appeared in Final Fantasy 10-2.
Final Fantasy 10-2 is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy 10, with the focus put on FF10's female characters. The first Final Fantasy game with an all-female cast of playable characters, Final Fantasy 10-2 sees Rikku, Yuna, and new character Paine search for lost Final Fantasy 10 protagonist Tidus. It earned mostly positive reviews at the time of its release and was generally a big hit with critics and fans alike. So it's no surprise to see fans use it as inspiration for their Final Fantasy 10 cosplays.
Final Fantasy 10-2 seems like an especially strong choice for the cosplay crowd as the game has a wide variety of outfits for the characters to obtain and equip. Its leveling system even includes something called the "Garment Grid" and "dress spheres," in case anyone wasn't convinced that Final Fantasy 10-2 is big on fashion.
Final Fantasy 10-2 may not be the end of the Final Fantasy 10 story, however. Even though the game released all the way back in 2003, it seems Square Enix has interest in making a sequel. Apparently, a Final Fantasy 10-3 story outline exists, and the game itself might get made sometime after Square Enix has finished its work on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. It will likely take years before Square Enix finishes up Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its sequels, though, so FF10 fans likely have a huge wait ahead of them.
Even though there hasn't been a new Final Fantasy 10 game since 2003 and the original game is 20 years old at this point, FF10's popularity persists. Fans have been drawn to Final Fantasy 10's cast of characters, with the subjects of this particular cosplay, Rikku and Yuna, standing out as two of the most popular characters from the game.
Final Fantasy 10 fan projects will likely continue between now and Final Fantasy 10-3's release (assuming it gets off the ground at all, that is). And that's just a testament to how much fans enjoy both the original game and its sequel. In the meantime, those who want to revisit Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 have a convenient way of doing so, as Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 are available in an HD remaster collection (itself currently available to play on Xbox Game Pass).
