5 Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3

DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on the Wii

This game was obviously going to feature. Widely considered one of the best Dragon Ball games ever made, and even one of the best anime games ever made, this game has a lot of pedigree. Its successor will have a lot to live up to, considering the generation that grew up on Budokai Tenkaichi 3 are now the young adults eagerly anticipating its sequel. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 features one of the largest fighting game rosters ever, even featuring half a dozen different Gokus with their own move sets, strengths, and transformations.

It's easy to spend hours upon hours in this game, meddling with different rosters for a player's team or going through the extra content, brushing up on Dragon Ball lore, or simply trying to unlock hidden characters like King Cold. While the graphics are dated now and the core mechanics a bit clunky, this game is still fun to pick up for a nostalgia trip or even for newer players to learn what they're waiting for.

4 Brawlhalla

The best thing about Brawlhalla is that it is completely free and available on nearly every platform imaginable. Brawlhalla is one of the premier fighting game platformers out there. It features a variety of different characters with unique sigs and different stats spreads and weapon types. The game is colorful and cheery and doesn't take itself seriously, but behind all of this is one of the best competitive fighting games out there right now.

Brawlhalla features mainstay 1v1 and 2v2 PvP modes as well as a plethora of different rotating game modes to try. This keeps the game fresh and entertaining. While it isn't similar to the Budokai Tenkaichi series in terms of combat mechanics or anything, it is still a superb fighting game and easy to get into.

3 Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat 11 picked up right where the previous entry in the series left off. The game is known for its impressive customizability and complex mechanics. Players can make multiple load-outs for each character, adding in and removing moves to suit their own playstyles and even completely changing how the character looks with gear and skins.

Mortal Kombat 11 is a bit slower-paced compared to other modern fighting games, but it's definitely a fun game. What makes it even better is the amazing graphics, probably the best of any game in the entire genre right now, over-the-top bloody violence, and awesome special moves.

2 Guilty Gear Strive

Guilty Gear Strive Gameplay

Published by ArcSys, this game is severely underrated. Guilty Gear Strive features extremely rapid combat, players don't even get time to think. The art style is unique and beautiful, the character details are incredibly detailed, and it's apparent that the game is hand drawn.

The game has a robust online system and a really catchy and adrenaline-boosting soundtrack, making it the perfect foray into fighting games for more casual fans of Budokai Tenkaichi. Featuring slick movement and fast-paced action, Guilt Gear Strive is one of the best fighting games for players of any skill level to pick up, it has a very low skill base to enjoy the game, but players can sink dozens of hours into it without scratching the surface.

1 Dragon Ball FighterZ

This was always going to be the number one suggestion. Dragon Ball FighterZ took both the fighting game and anime game genres by storm with its beautifully detailed character models, vibrant and flashy special moves, solid roster, and excellent post-launch support.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a decent foray into the fighting game world for any Dragon Ball fan; it features a roster with long beloved Z fighters and newer characters, most characters are playable to a high level, and players can build their own 3-man team. Definitely a must-try.
