FIFA 23 features plenty of new features, the most notable of which is probably crossplay. It's arguably taken a lot longer than it should have for EA to bring the functionality to its annual sports sim series, yet, despite some serious limitations in regard to its implementation, most FIFA players are viewing it as yet another case of better late than never.

Crossplay support in FIFA 23 is nowhere near as comprehensive as some would like it to be, but it at least provides players with a few more options when it comes to playing with their friends. Before they can start doing so, though, they'll first need to understand how crossplay works in FIFA 23 and how to set it all up.

How Crossplay Works in FIFA 23

Unfortunately, FIFA 23's crossplay support splits players up into two different pools based on their console generation. PS4 and Xbox One players are in one pool, with PS5, Xbox Series, and PC players in the other. This means that cross-generation play is not possible in FIFA 23, nor is crossplay supported on the much-maligned Legacy Edition version of the game for the Nintendo Switch. Crossplay can't be used in any co-op modes either, which will no doubt disappoint some players.

How to Setup Crossplay in FIFA 23

Crossplay should be enabled by default, but players can confirm that it's on by pressing the R2/RT button from the main menu to open up the Social tab. From here, they should hit the Options/Start button to go into "Social Settings" and then navigate to the Matchmaking Options menu by selecting the "Cross-play settings" option that can be found within the "Cross-play" tab. If for whatever reason "Cross-play enabled" is set to no, they'll simply need to change it back to yes.

Assuming crossplay is enabled, players will automatically be paired with people on other eligible platforms when playing competitive FUT matches and Online seasons. To play with a friend, however, there are a few more steps that they'll need to carry out. First, they'll need to add their friend in the Social menu, which can be done using their EA ID. To do so, players should navigate to the "Player search" tab and type their friend's ID into the box. If they don't know it, their friend will be able to check their EA ID by heading to the same menu and taking a look at the box on the right.

After two players have become friends, one will need to invite the other through either the Online Friendlies menu or the "Ways to Play" screen that appears when setting up a Friendlies match in FIFA Ultimate Team mode. In the case of the latter, they'll simply need to select the "Play a Friend" option and then choose their friend from a list of online friends in order to send them an invite. If the person receiving the invite is busy when it comes in, they'll be able to find it under the "Game Invites" tab of the Social menu later on. If not, they can accept it there and then in order to get the ball rolling.

FIFA 23 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
