New Game Plus mode is now pretty common in modern video games, particularly when it comes to RPGs. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise to learn that Final Fantasy 16 has one, and it's a pretty good one, at that. Rather than simply amp up the difficulty, the mode also makes a few key changes to Clive's gear and stats, providing players with plenty of incentive to dive back in for another playthrough.

One of the most daunting things about any New Game Plus mode is the prospect of losing one's progress, whether that be levels, equipment, or skills. For this reason, many players will probably be keen to learn what carries over in Final Fantasy 16's New Game + mode and what new content they can expect to find should they decide to return to Valisthea.

Clive's gear, abilities, and level will all carry over in a New Game + playthrough, meaning that nothing really goes to waste. This can make a standard playthrough incredibly easy, which is why the developers opted to add a new mode. In addition to the Story Focused and Action focussed options, players who have completed the game will be able to choose Final Fantasy Mode, which brings with it a number of big changes.

Enemies in Final Fantasy mode are considerably stronger, with some swapped out for different enemies entirely. To combat this, Clive's maximum level increases from 50 to 100, but that's not the only big change. All of the upgradable pieces of gear will have their max levels raised from +2 to +5 and Eikonic Weapons can be reinforced this time around. Clive will be able to craft Ultima Weapon, too, which is by far the strongest weapon in Final Fantasy 16.

As with a standard playthrough of Final Fantasy 16, players can expect their New Game Plus run to last around 35 hours. That said, having seen all of the cutscenes once already, they may opt to skip them during subsequent runs, which should bring their total playtime down below the thirty-hour mark. Whether or not they engage with any of the game's side content can also make a difference, with certain side quests and Notorious Mark hunts needing to be completed before players can craft Ultima Weapon.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
