A lot of the early side quests in Final Fantasy 16 are fairly mundane and serve more as busy work for the player than anything else. However, after the narrative's first big plot twist, the developers start using side quests for additional world-building, as evidenced by the "Playthings" side quest in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque.

Much like the "All Bark" side quest, which becomes available around the same time, "Playthings" delves a little deeper into the plight of Valisthea's Bearers by throwing players right into the center of an incredibly messed up situation. It's still just as easy as a lot of the side quests that came before it, but is absolutely worth checking for the shock and awe that it is likely to evoke.

How to Complete Playthings in Final Fantasy 16

"Playthings" first becomes available during the "Righting Wrongs" main story mission. Final Fantasy 16 players will be able to trigger it by speaking with a little girl named Lisette near the entrance to Moore, the small settlement that they'll be tasked with visiting as part of the "The Dame" sub-quest. Lisette will tell Clive that she's lost her dear Chloe and that she can't bare the thought of not being able to stroke her beautiful white hair again. Always one to please, Clive agrees to help her find her lost pet and sets out to find out more information.

After leaving Lisette, players will need to speak with the Fastidious Farmwife, who can be found sweeping up on the main path that leads toward Moore. She'll mention that she saw Chloe over by the nearby windmills, which is where players should head next. As they approach, they'll find a barking dog, but this one has brown fur rather than white. The dog does alert Clive to the presence of a dead body though, and, upon further inspection, this corpse turns out to be that of Chloe.

Lisette soon arrives and treats the death as an annoyance rather than a tragedy. It turns out that this isn't the first Chloe either, with several Bearers having served as the young girl's playthings prior to this. It's a little reminiscent of Ramsay Bolton and Reek from Game of Thrones, only without the flaying and forced amputation. Clive then tries to explain to Lisette that Chloe was a person too, after which, the quest will end and players will receive 19 XP and 20 Magicked Ash as a reward.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
