Echoes of the Fallen is the first of two DLC expansions for Final Fantasy 16, both of which provide players with several hours of additional story content. It was first announced by producer Naoki Yoshida back in September of 2023 before being shadow-dropped shortly after its formal unveiling at the 2023 Game Awards.

After purchasing the expansion, some players may be wondering how to start the Echoes of the Fallen DLC and whether or not they need to have completed the main story of Final Fantasy 16 before they can do so. This guide will aim to answer both questions, while also providing some additional information about the FF16 DLC expansion.

In order to start the Echoes of the Fallen DLC, players will need to speak with Charon and select the Echoes of the Fallen dialog option. For those unaware, Charon can be found standing behind the counter at Charon's Toll, which is in the central area of Cid's Hideaway. However, players will only see the aforementioned dialog option after reaching a certain point in the story and meeting a few requirements.

Before being able to start the Echoes of the Fallen DLC, players will first need to progress through the main story until they unlock Origin on the world map and then complete the "Where There's a Will" and "Priceless" side quests. These focus on Joshua and Jill respectively and will lead to the pair joining Clive's party permanently upon their completion, which will be important when starting the FF16 DLC a little later on.

Players may also want to level Clive up a little, as most of the enemies they'll be facing in Echoes of the Fallen are around level 50. Thankfully, most players will already be approaching the Final Fantasy 16 level cap by the time they unlock the DLC, as they won't gain access to Origin until near the very end of the game's main story. Enemies are significantly stronger when playing on Final Fantasy mode, though again, players shouldn't be too far behind by the time they've met the Echoes of the Fallen unlock requirements.
