The Masamune is one of the most iconic weapons to appear in Final Fantasy. It has appeared in almost every entry, but many regard its depiction in Final Fantasy 7 to be its best, as it served as Sephiroth's primary weapon from the beginning of the game until the very end. Though the weapon's depiction in Final Fantasy 7 made it seem a little impractical, its design in Final Fantasy 16 is much better suited to Clive and fits seamlessly in with the rest of his equipment.

Clive can acquire a large assortment of unique weapons in Final Fantasy 16, and the Masamune is one of the best available. While most weapons can be purchased from shops or crafted after collecting certain materials, the only way to get the Masamune is to search the world of Valisthea and find the chest it resides in. Before players can find this chest, however, they must first gain access to The Kingdom of Waloed.

To acquire the Masamune, players will first need to begin Footfalls in Ash, Final Fantasy 16's forty-second main quest. Upon doing so, they will gain access to The Kingdom of Waloed and can explore its desolate wastelands to uncover several hidden areas, trials, and items. Progressing the story requires Clive to head through The Angry Gap and reach Eistla, but those hoping to acquire the iconic Masamune sword will need to stay in The Angry Gap a little while longer.

Fast-traveling to Eistla and crossing the bridge leading west is the fastest way to reach The Angry Gap, but if players have yet to activate The Angry Gap's Obelisk, they must travel there on foot from The Shadow Coast.

If players have completed the White-Winged Wonder side quest , Clive can use his Chocobo to get to The Angry Gap a little faster.

Clive opens a chest and finds the Masamune in Final Fantasy 16

Arriving at The Angry Gap from The Shadow Coast, players should hug the wall to Clive's right and follow it until they find a hill leading west. Traveling to the top of the hill, Clive will be faced with a small gap in the wall to his left, which he can shimmy through the find The Hand of Rhea Chronolith and a treasure chest. Interacting with the Chronlolith will unlock the Trial by Ice, in which Clive must rely on Shiva's abilities to defeat several waves of enemies; opening the chest to the right will reward him with the Masamune.

Masamune Stats

When equipped, the Masamune offers 310 Attack and 310 Stagger, making it one of the best swords available during the late-game. That said, players who have unlocked the Ragnarok sword before their trip to Waloed won't really need the Masamune, as the Ragnarok is slightly more powerful.

The Masamune cannot be Reinforced, so its base stats are permanent; the only way to increase its power is to equip Clive with an Accessory that boosts his Attack. The Badge of Might and the Genji Gloves can be used to do this, but those hoping to see a big increase in damage should consider crafting the Ragnarok and then crafting the Gotterdammerung, the most powerful weapon available in Final Fantasy 16's base game. The overall best weapon in the game, Ultima Weapon, can only be acquired during New Game+ playthroughs.

Final Fantasy 16 is available exclusively for PlayStation 5.
