While most of Final Fantasy 16's best weapons are only available through crafting, some can be found in treasure chests. There are countless treasure chests scattered around Valisthea, but players hoping to find the chest containing the Ancient Sword may struggle, as it is very easy to miss, especially if players skip the Live and Let Live side quest.

Where To Find The Ancient Sword In Final Fantasy 16

Before players can acquire the Ancient Sword, they must first complete Out of the Shadow, Final Fantasy 16's thirty-second main quest. Upon doing so, the Onward main quest begins, and Clive will be tasked with traveling to Boklad, a new area located in The Dhalmekian Republic's northeast corner. Once players have access to this area, the hunt for the Ancient Sword can begin.

Players who have already activated the Boklad Obelisk can fast-travel there and proceed south into The Steps of the Forgotten. Instead of leaving this area, Clive should travel to the center and turn right to face southwest. Here, he will be faced with a small hill that he can ascend; approaching the wall at the top will prompt him to climb into a new area. Players who have completed the Live and Let Live side quest should be familiar with this area, but they may have missed the treasure chest containing the Ancient Sword.

Once Clive climbs this wall, players will see a treasure chest directly ahead. Interacting with it will reward Clive with the Ancient Sword, one of Final Fantasy 16's more secret weapons.

The Ancient Sword in Final Fantasy 16

The Ancient Sword boasts an impressive 252 Attack and 252 Stagger, making it only 16 points shy of the Excalibur sword. It serves as a pretty useful substitute for Excalibur if players have yet to acquire it, but it's still pretty lacking in terms of strength, especially during the Onward main quest.

To make matters worse, players can craft the Excalibur before ever visiting Boklad, making the Ancient Sword seem like a pretty unnecessary addition to Clive's arsenal. That said, its description does offer a brief insight into the age of the Fallen, so players hoping to familiarize themselves with Valisthea's history might want to seek it out.

The Ancient Sword cannot be Reinforced; the only way to increase its strength is to equip Clive with different accessories or have him drink a Strength Tonic. The Genji Gloves accessory increases damage dealt to enemies by 5%; the Badge of Might can increase Attack by 7 or 12points, depending on whether the accessory has been Reinforced or not.

Final Fantasy 16 is available exclusively for PlayStation 5.
