Summons have always played an important role in the Final Fantasy franchise, and this is once again the case in Final Fantasy 16. This time, however, they're referred to as Eikons and are each tied to a human known as their Dominant, with playable protagonist Clive unlocking the abilities of new Eikons throughout the course of the main story. There are eight of them in total, as well as two non-playable enemy Eikons that serve as special boss fights.

Unlocking every Eikon in Final Fantasy 16 is a relatively straightforward affair, as all eight FF16 Eikons are encountered as part of the main story. As such, players simply need to make their way through the game, though they will typically need to defeat the Eikon's Dominant in battle in order to gain access to their powers, which can sometimes be a little tricky. Of course, for fans of Final Fantasy Summons, it will likely prove to be well worth the effort.

1 Phoenix (Fire)

ff16-eikons-phoenix

Phoenix is the first Eikon that players are introduced to and is the Eikon of Clive's brother Joshua. Players will have access to Phoenix's Eikonic Abilities from the beginning of the "Sunrise, Sunset" main story mission, though won't actually get a chance to properly test them out in battle until the "Lost in a Fog" mission.

3 Ifrit (Fire)

ff16-eikons-ifrit

Ifrit is Clive's Eikon and first appears in the "Flight of the Fledgling" main story mission. However, players won't actually unlock all of Ifrit's abilities until the "The Meaning of Life" mission, which comes much later on in the game. Though Ifrit has fewer Eikonic Abilities than the Final Fantasy 16's other Eikons, the fact that they can be used together with those of Phoenix is a huge bonus, as this can only normally be done through mastery.

Enemy Eikons

ff16-eikons-typhon-titan-lost

In addition to the eight playable Eikons that Clive learns to harness throughout the course of Final Fantasy 16, players will also encounter two enemy Eikons; these being Typhon and Titan Lost. Players will square off against the former during the "The Crystals' Curse" main story mission, while the latter, which is an Aether-infused variant of the regular Titan Eikon, is fought during a subsequent mission called "Into the Darkness."

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 5.

FAQ

Q: How many Eikons are there in Final Fantasy 16?

There are eight unlockable Eikons in Final Fantasy 16 as well as two non-playable enemy Eikons.

Q: Are Eikons like Summons?

Although the Final Fantasy 16 Eikons are a lot like traditional Summons, there are a few key differences, the most notable being that players call upon the abilities of Eikons rather than summoning them to the battlefield directly.

Q: Can Eikons be used at any time?

Most Eikonic Abilities have cooldowns, so although players will initially be able to use them whenever they like, they'll need to wait a certain amount of time before they can use them again. They can speed up the process by upgrading the ability or by equipping its corresponding "Breath of..." accessory. There are also certain situations where Clive can transform into Ifrit, but these are all scripted, meaning that players will not be able to choose when they transform.

Q: Are there any missable Eikons in Final Fantasy 16?

Unlike the Aeons in Final Fantasy 10 or the Summons in Final Fantasy 7, every Eikon in Final Fantasy 16 is unlocked as part of the main story. As such, there are no optional or missable Eikons in the game.
