As the long-running JRPG series introduces yet another excellent entry in Final Fantasy 16, players will undoubtedly look to the mature narrative and more action-orientated combat as key highlights of the game. Clive Rosfield's story is one of strife, and things are never easy when there are so many obstacles standing in the way.

It makes perfect sense, then, that the new combat system comes in conjunction with a greater emphasis on tougher battles against more formidable opponents. Before things get too overwhelming, it is perhaps better to start off on the right foot, beginning with the first major battle against the Gigas in Final Fantasy 16.

How to Beat Gigas in Final Fantasy 16

After going back in time as part of Clive's flashback, the young hero now finds himself face-to-face with a formidable opponent from the goblin faction. The Gigas boasts far more HP than other goblins and has unique moves that can be dangerous. Having the right strategy will make this fight much more manageable.

First Phase

The most important thing to remember is that the Gigas is a melee foe, which uses its big club to go about its business. Here are the initial attacks to look out for:

  • An overhead smash using the club: Wait a second when it raises the club before dodging to the side for a Precision Dodge, and counterattack.
  • Club swings from side to side: When the Gigas lowers the club and readies itself, either get far away or dodge behind it during the first swing to get some free hits in.
  • The Gigas will also charge at Clive if there is enough distance between the two, so move to the side to avoid any contact and use Fire/Fira for ranged damage.

As much as possible, players should use the Blessing of the Phoenix abilities to deal heavier damage to the Gigas, and string together Shift combos to consistently lower the Will of the Gigas. Once it's Staggered, they can press on harder to take advantage of the increased damage.

Second Phase

After reducing the health of the boss to about half, it will start to become even more aggressive. In addition to its normal moves, it will add the Big Swing move to its arsenal. This will be an extended combo that sees it swing the club round and round, all while moving closer to Clive. Players should avoid getting caught in a corner and keep moving to prevent any harm from coming to the protagonist.

If players follow the above strategies the Gigas will eventually fall and drop the Hard Leather Armlets as a reward. Players will also get 54 XP and 45 Ability Points.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
