There are many different ways in which the combat of Final Fantasy 16 will challenge players. From the tougher-than-usual enemies to the many different combat systems that can be used at any given time, players are already busy enough trying to stay alive. However, the folks at Square Enix are not letting anyone off the hook, as they have allowed enemies some tricks of their own.

Opponents have access to various buffs in the game and can become even more annoying nuisances if they are not dealt with in the right way. While Clive can overwhelm a foe with a barrage of attacks, what happens when that option becomes useless? Those seeking the secrets to breaking the guard of an enemy in Final Fantasy 16 can read on to find out.

How to Break an Enemy's Guard in Final Fantasy 16

Breaking an Enemy's Guard in Final Fantasy 16

Before unleashing all of the most powerful combos available to Clive and his merry band of allies, it is always wise to survey the battlefield for the dangers that lie ahead. Smaller enemies are always easily taken care of, but in huge numbers, they can become a threat, especially if they learn how to guard.

An enemy that is guarding will take no damage from any attack from the front. By moving to the rear of this opponent, Clive can then begin to really do damage. However, the best way to overcome the issue of a guarding enemy is to break it entirely, and this can be done in several ways.

Basic abilities such as Burning Blade (holding Square and releasing once charged) and Charged Magic can instantly break an enemy's guard. The same goes for more powerful Eikonic Abilities like Rising Flames, and all of them work even when executed from the front. Once the guard of an enemy is broken, they will be open to all sorts of attacks from Clive, Torgal, and anyone else in the party.

A great way to kick things off when faced with an enemy who is guarding is to use Phoenix Shift to close the gap and then hold Square while in transition to build up to a Burning Blade. Next, players should release the button just near enough to the foe to instantly break the guard and proceed to mop up all of the enemies in proximity. If things are too dangerous up close, Charged Magic will ensure that the party is safe at a distance.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
