Despite producer Naoki Yoshida's initial claims that Final Fantasy 16 would not be receiving any story DLC, the announcement of Echoes of the Fallen didn't come as too much of a surprise to many. The speed with which it was released following its TGS 2023 announcement trailer did catch some people off guard though, with many having to wait hours for the base version of the game to re-download before they could dive into the DLC.

Final Fantasy 16: How to Start the Echoes of the Fallen DLC

Players will need to have met a few fairly simple requirements before they can start the Echoes of the Fallen DLC in Final Fantasy 16.

For hardcore Final Fantasy fans and those who enjoyed the main story of Final Fantasy 16, purchasing the FF16 expansion pack will probably be a bit of a no-brainer. However, those still on the fence may well be interested in learning how long the Echoes of the Fallen DLC takes to beat and whether or not the expansion is really worth the price of admission. This guide will aim to answer both of those questions.

How Long Does it Take to Beat Echoes of the Fallen?

Most players will be able to complete Final Fantasy 16's Echoes of the Fallen DLC in under three hours. As one might expect, playing through the expansion on Final Fantasy mode has the potential to prolong the experience quite a bit depending on the player's skill level, while skipping cut scenes and dialog can shave a decent chunk of time from the aforementioned total. There's no new content of note outside of the titular questline, but what is included is fairly enjoyable and undoubtedly adds to the overall FF16 experience.

How Does Echoes of the Fallen Compare to Other RPG DLC Expansions?

Although the games couldn't be much more different tonally, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet serve as a great point of reference when looking to assess the value of the Final Fantasy 16 DLC. Like the FF16 expansion pass, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is broken up into two parts, with the first also clocking in at around three hours in length. The Scarlet & Violet DLC is $10 more expensive though, suggesting that Echoes of the Fallen offers slightly better value for money than The Teal Mask. It's also worth noting that Echoes of the Fallen can be purchased individually for less than half the cost of the FF16 expansion pass, suggesting that The Rising Tide will offer considerably more content when it releases in the spring of 2024.

Is Echoes of the Fallen Worth the Money?

Given its $10 price tag when purchased separately and its approximate three-hour length, a single playthrough of Echoes of the Fallen provides players with around 18 minutes of gameplay for every dollar spent. This is the equivalent of a sixty-dollar game lasting 18 hours, or a seventy-dollar game clocking in at 21 hours. With this in mind, most will probably see Echoes of the Fallen as fairly decent value for money, although it does fare pretty poorly when compared to the base version of the game. A main story playthrough of Final Fantasy 16 will take most players around 35 to 40 hours, with the average completionist run clocking in at around 80.
