One of the many hallmarks of a JRPG game like Final Fantasy 16 is the way that players can grow their characters, investing in powerful skills and abilities, equipping the right equipment, and fighting in a certain way that takes advantage of any buffs and positive enhancements. That said, rather than managing an entire party, Square Enix's latest adventure focuses solely on one playable character.

Yet, that doesn't mean that there are fewer options to consider when trying to create the best version of Clive for a particular style of play. The different Eikonic abilities that can be added to his repertoire are plenty, and beyond just their base versions, they can be further upgraded and mastered to bring even more fun to the table in Final Fantasy 16.

Depending on the progression of the main story of the game, players will come into contact with the various Dominants of the Eikons. While some may be friends and others foes, the end result is that Clive will eventually gain the power of the likes of Ramuh, Titan, Garuda, and more during his quest to bring everlasting peace to the lands.

With each new Eikon's essence being claimed, Clive is able to tap into new elemental magic spells, as well as gain access to Eikonic Abilities that expand the possibility of combos and link-ups. As for Eikonic Feats like Garuda's Deadly Embrace, these are signature abilities that require no learning and are available the moment players gain access to their respective Eikons.

Eikonic Abilities Mastery

As stated above, Eikonic Feats can be used immediately after Clive claims the essence of an Eikon. However, many other abilities require Ability Points to be unlocked. Via the Abilities menu, players can take a look at just what is available at any given time, with details showing both the damage-dealing and will-breaking capabilities of each Eikonic Ability.

After being unlocked, these Eikonic Abilities can be further enhanced by upgrading, bestowing additional effectiveness and bonuses. Following that, they can be mastered, which usually allows these abilities to be equipped to any other Eikon that Clive chooses to take into battle. With three Eikons equipped at any given time and just two Eikonic Abilities to tap into, the freedom to mix and match will make it possible for even more elemental synergy to occur.

Of course, upgrading already entails a hefty sum of Ability Points, and for mastery, that will require much, much more investment. For players looking to fully buy into a particular Eikon and its abilities, it is essential to consider mastery as a worthwhile investment in the long run.

Earning Ability Points

Final Fantasy 16 Earning Ability Points

The quickest and easiest way for players to accrue Ability Points is to fight battles in Final Fantasy 16. Most enemies will drop a decent amount of Ability Points after being defeated, so it is in everyone's best interest to fight as many battles as possible in the open world. To quicken things up, players should be sure to get The Wages of Warcraft accessory at Charon's for a 20% boost in Ability Points earned.

Another great way to earn ability points in Final Fantasy 16 is to complete the side quests that crop up every once in a while, with some rewarding a few hundred points for Clive's efforts. Either way, building up a nice pool of Ability Points will be helpful for everyone.

Final Fantasy 16 is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
