Fate/Strange Fake is a spin-off of the original Fate series. The format of the story is similar to the other series within the Fate franchise. A group of magicians will assume the role of Masters, and summon legendary heroes as their servants, in order to participate in the Holy Grail War, the masters will send their servants to battle against each other. The last one standing will gain the rights to use the magical power of the Holy Grail to fulfill their wish.

Fate/Strange Fake takes place about five years after the fifth Holy Grail War that happened in Japan. This time around, the Holy Grail War will be held in a Western American city called Snowfield. Other than the usual battle to the death, there are also all kinds of strange things happening in this particular Holy Grail War, such as a missing servant class or impossible servant summoning.

Fate Strange Fake Teaser

The spin-off series started its life as a novel series written by Ryohgo Narita, the man behind several iconic series such as Baccano! and Durarara!. That being said, Fate/Strange Fake is not the first time Ryohgo Narita works on a spin-off of a large franchise. After all, he is also the writer for two of the biggest spin-offs for the Bleach franchise, Bleach: Spirits are Forever with You, and Bleach: Can’t Fear Your Own World. Furthermore, Ryohgo Narita is also the original writer of the currently ongoing anime series, Dead Mount Death Play.

Despite having more than enough content from its source material, A1-Pictures decided to adapt Fate/Strange Fake -Whispers of the Dawn- as a television film. It’s unclear whether the rest of the novels will be adapted as a series of movies, such as Sword Art Online Progressive, or will it continue as a regular anime series, such as Ghost in the Shell. It’s also possible that the fate of this spin-off will be based on the reception of this upcoming television film. So be sure to visit the Anime Expo 2023 on July 1st, so you can catch this brand-new entry into the Fate family.
